The name on your listing should be the name on your door, not your incorporation certificate. Here is how to handle verification when they differ and what to do if you are already listed wrong.
Your company is registered as Hendricks Holdings LLC and everyone knows you as Riverside Barbers. Or you bought a business, kept the name customers recognise, and the paperwork says something entirely different. Trading names are completely normal and Google Business Profile handles them in a way that is not obvious from the interface.
Get it wrong and you either become invisible under a name nobody searches, or you fail verification because your documents do not match your listing.
This guide covers which name belongs on the profile, how to verify when the legal and trading names differ, and what to do if you are already listed under the wrong one.
Your Business Profile should carry the name displayed on your signage and used with customers, not the registered legal entity name.
Google's guidance is consistent on this: represent the business as it is known in the real world.
Use the trading name when:
Use the legal name when: it genuinely is the customer-facing name, which for many professional firms it is.
The test is your signage. If someone standing outside would see "Riverside Barbers," that is the listing name, regardless of what Companies House or the state registry holds.
🛠️ Action Step: Photograph your signage. Whatever it says is what your listing should say, and it is also the evidence you will need at verification.
Prepare documentation connecting the trading name to the legal entity, because verification checks your name against records that may show the registered name instead.
This is the practical difficulty and it is entirely manageable with preparation.
Documents that help:
A DBA or trading name registration is the cleanest solution. Where your jurisdiction offers one, filing it creates an official document connecting both names and removes the ambiguity permanently.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Listing the legal name to make verification easier, then finding nobody searches it. You have solved a one-off problem by creating a permanent one.
Do not put both names in the name field, because it breaches naming guidelines and looks like keyword stuffing.
Not acceptable:
Where the legal name belongs: nowhere on the profile, generally. It belongs on your invoices, contracts and website footer, which is where customers and regulators expect it.
The description is the one exception worth considering. A line noting the operating entity can be appropriate for regulated businesses where customers may need it, though it is unnecessary for most.
Use the trading name consistently across every directory, because inconsistency between your listing and citations undermines the connection Google is building.
This is where businesses with two names create problems for themselves.
What to align:
The legal name appearing in some citations and the trading name in others produces exactly the ambiguity that weakens local visibility. Pick the trading name and use it everywhere customer-facing. The underlying discipline is in the NAP consistency guide.
Change the name on your existing profile rather than creating a new one, because a rename preserves reviews and history while a new listing forfeits both.
How to handle it:
Expect a temporary wobble. Name changes commonly cause a short ranking dip while the change propagates, which is normal and recovers.
Never create a second listing under the correct name. You will have a duplicate, split signals, and a real risk of both being suspended.
📊 Flento Data: Across local profiles, name consistency between the listing and citations correlates with more stable visibility, which is why picking one customer-facing name and using it everywhere matters more than which one you pick.
Where one entity trades under several genuinely distinct names, each may warrant its own profile, subject to the usual distinctness test.
This is common with holding companies and multi-brand operators.
Each needs:
Where the brands are genuinely separate, the two-brand considerations in managing local SEO across two brands apply.
🔥 Quick Win: If your jurisdiction offers DBA or trading name registration and you have not filed one, do it. It costs little and removes verification friction permanently.
Flento keeps your name consistent everywhere, which is what prevents the ambiguity a dual-name business creates.
Business Listing Management Software finds directories still carrying the wrong name, which is the usual leftover problem.
Google Business Profile Optimizer monitors the profile through a name change, when unexpected edits and review are most likely.
Local Keyword Rank Tracker gives you a before-and-after baseline so you can tell whether a post-change dip is recovering normally.

Q: Should a Google Business Profile use the legal name or the trading name? A: The trading name, if that is what appears on your signage and what customers know you by. Google asks businesses to be represented as they are known in the real world.
Q: What if verification documents show the legal name? A: Prepare a DBA or trading name registration, a licence or utility bill in the trading name, and signage photographs. A registered trading name is the cleanest way to connect both permanently.
Q: Can I include both names in the listing? A: No. Combining them breaches naming guidelines and reads as keyword stuffing. The legal name belongs on invoices, contracts and the website footer instead.
Q: I am listed under the wrong name. Should I create a new listing? A: No. Rename the existing profile, which preserves reviews and history. A new listing creates a duplicate and risks both being suspended.
Q: Will changing the name affect rankings? A: Usually a temporary dip while the change propagates, recovering as citations are updated to match. Update the directories after the profile change, not before.
Q: Can one company have profiles under several trading names? A: Yes, where each is a genuinely distinct customer-facing business with its own signage, phone number and identity. The usual distinctness test applies.
The name on your listing should be the name on your door, not the one on your incorporation certificate. Getting that backwards makes you invisible to the people searching for you.
Photograph the signage, file a trading name registration if you can, and use that one name across every directory.
