Google is phasing out native GBP Chat for WhatsApp and SMS. Here are the exact setup steps, verification rules, and the 24 to 48 hour review window.
I was reviewing a Google Business Profile for a plumber in Columbus, OH last month when I noticed something I've seen dozens of times now, and it's about to become a bigger problem than most business owners realize. He was still relying on native GBP Chat to field customer questions, and that feature is on its way out.
Google has been quietly pushing businesses toward WhatsApp and SMS for Business Profile messaging instead of the old built-in Chat feature. If you haven't set up either one yet, here's exactly how to do it, what Google requires before it'll let you turn it on, and what happens to the businesses that wait too long.
For more on this, see our guide to WhatsApp vs SMS, which covers whether WhatsApp or SMS works better for messages from your profile.
If this comes up for you, we cover it in more detail in our piece on Google Business Profile chat being retired.
Google's native Chat feature never scaled well for businesses managing message volume, and it lacked the delivery reliability of dedicated messaging platforms. Google is now routing Business Profile messaging through WhatsApp Business and SMS instead, both of which have far better message delivery infrastructure than Google's own in-house tool ever had.
For business owners, this isn't optional forever. In my experience auditing Google Business Profile messaging setups, the businesses that migrate early keep their response rate history intact. The ones who wait get caught flat-footed when Chat disappears from their profile with no warning banner most owners actually notice.
Action Step: Check your GBP dashboard right now under Messages. If it still says "Chat," you're on the feature Google is retiring.
You need three things before Google will let you connect WhatsApp to your Business Profile: a verified GBP listing, a WhatsApp Business account (not a personal WhatsApp number), and a phone number that isn't already tied to a different WhatsApp account. Miss any one of these and the setup will fail silently or get stuck in review.
The WhatsApp Business requirement trips up more owners than anything else in this process. A lot of small business owners try to connect the same personal WhatsApp number they've used for years, and Google rejects it because personal WhatsApp doesn't support the business messaging API that GBP integrates with.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Using your personal cell number's WhatsApp instead of setting up WhatsApp Business first. You cannot migrate a personal number over later without losing your chat history, so get this right the first time.
If your listing isn't verified yet, none of this will work. Google's own guidance on verifying your business covers the current methods, and our own breakdown of Google Business Profile verification methods walks through which option applies to your business type.
Action Step: Download WhatsApp Business (it's a separate app from regular WhatsApp) and register a phone number that isn't tied to any existing WhatsApp account.
Here's the exact path: open your Business Profile, go to Edit Profile, select Contact, then Chat, and choose WhatsApp as your messaging channel. This is the same navigation flow whether you're managing the listing through the Google Business Profile app or through Google Search directly.
Don't overcomplicate this. The interface Google shows here changes slightly every few months, but the sequence of Edit Profile to Contact to Chat has stayed consistent through every update I've walked clients through.
🔥 Quick Win: Do this on desktop, not mobile. The Contact settings menu is easier to navigate on the full dashboard, and you're less likely to fat-finger the wrong toggle.
Action Step: Complete the WhatsApp connection today, even if you also plan to add SMS. You can run both channels at once.
Google typically takes 24 to 48 hours to review and activate a new WhatsApp connection on a Business Profile. During this window, your listing will usually still show the old Chat option or no messaging option at all, which understandably makes owners think something broke.
This isn't a bug. In my experience running this setup with clients from Austin, TX to Nashville, TN, the review window has been consistent across almost every account I've touched. Google is verifying that the WhatsApp Business number is legitimate and not already flagged for spam or policy violations.
💡 Pro Tip: Don't resubmit the connection if it's still pending after a few hours. Resubmitting during the review window can reset the clock and push your approval back further, not speed it up.
If it's been more than 72 hours with no activation, check that your WhatsApp Business account itself is fully verified and that the phone number hasn't been flagged elsewhere. That's the most common cause of a stuck review.
Businesses that don't migrate off native Chat before Google fully retires it lose their messaging entry point on their Business Profile entirely, with no automatic fallback to WhatsApp or SMS. Google doesn't reassign your customers' saved chat threads to a new channel for you. That transition has to be set up manually, by you, before the cutoff.
I've seen this play out with a dental group in Phoenix, AZ that assumed Google would auto-migrate their setup the way some platform changes quietly happen in the background. It didn't. Their "Message" button disappeared from their profile for nine days before anyone on their team noticed calls had dropped, and it never showed up in their Google Business Profile Insights as anything more than a quiet dip in profile actions.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Assuming a Google feature retirement means an automatic upgrade. It almost never does. You have to do the migration work yourself, on your own timeline, before Google forces the issue.
The businesses treating this as a checklist item to knock out this week are the ones who won't feel any disruption at all. The ones treating it as "something to deal with eventually" are the ones who'll lose a messaging channel with zero warning.
Flento's Google Business Profile Optimizer flags exactly this kind of gap during a profile audit, including whether your listing is still running on a messaging feature Google is phasing out. It's the same kind of blind spot that hit that Phoenix dental group: nobody was actively watching the Contact section of their profile, so nobody caught the change until customers had already stopped reaching them.
Instead of manually checking your Messages tab every few weeks, the optimizer surfaces profile completeness and configuration issues, including outdated contact settings, as part of a routine scan. Businesses running updates through the Google My Business API instead of manual dashboard edits catch this kind of change even faster, since automated syncs flag configuration drift the moment it happens.
For a business managing multiple locations, that's the difference between catching a Chat retirement across all ten listings in one pass versus finding out location by location as calls quietly stop coming in.
Action Step: Run a profile audit and check whether your Contact and messaging setup shows any flags before Google's retirement timeline forces your hand.

Q: Can I use my personal WhatsApp number for my Google Business Profile? A: No. Google requires a WhatsApp Business account, which uses a separate app and supports the business messaging API that GBP connects through. A personal WhatsApp number won't complete the setup.
Q: How long does Google take to approve WhatsApp chat on a Business Profile? A: Most connections are reviewed and activated within 24 to 48 hours. If it takes longer than 72 hours, check that your WhatsApp Business account itself is fully verified.
Q: What happens to my old GBP Chat message history when I switch to WhatsApp? A: It doesn't transfer automatically. Native Chat conversations stay in Google's old system and won't migrate into WhatsApp Business, so export or note anything important before you switch.
Q: Can I use both WhatsApp and SMS at the same time on my profile? A: Yes. Google allows you to connect both channels, and customers will typically see whichever option you've set as primary, with the other available as a fallback in some regions.
Q: Do I need a business phone plan to set up WhatsApp Business? A: No, but you do need a phone number that isn't already registered to a different WhatsApp account, business or personal.
Q: Will switching to WhatsApp affect my Google Business Profile ranking? A: There's no confirmed direct ranking factor tied to messaging channel choice. What matters is responsiveness. A dead or broken Contact option looks inactive to Google, and inactivity signals are something Google does weigh.
Q: What if I don't want to use WhatsApp or SMS at all? A: You can leave messaging off entirely, but that removes a contact path a meaningful share of mobile searchers expect to see. Most businesses are better off picking one channel than offering none.
The businesses handling this well right now aren't doing anything complicated. They checked their Contact settings, connected WhatsApp Business properly the first time, and moved on. Do that this week, before Google makes the decision for you by retiring the old option outright.
