Setting up your service area correctly determines whether customers in every zip code you serve can find you. Here's every step explained.
Service area businesses, plumbers, landscapers, cleaners, electricians, caterers, mobile pet groomers, and hundreds of other business types, deliver their services at the customer's location rather than at a fixed storefront. Google Business Profile has specific settings designed for these businesses, and setting them up correctly directly determines how visible you are to customers across your service territory.
This guide covers exactly how to add, edit, and optimize your service area settings on Google Business Profile.

Before adding a service area, you need to know which type of listing applies to your business.
Storefront business: You have a physical location that customers visit (a restaurant, a retail shop, a dental office). Your address is visible on your listing. You may also have a service area if you also serve customers at their location (a restaurant that also delivers, for example).
Service-area business: You serve customers primarily at their location and do not have a staffed, customer-facing storefront. Plumbers, landscapers, house cleaners, pet groomers, and caterers are typical examples. For service-area businesses, Google allows you to hide your home or warehouse address and instead show only your service area.
If you are a service-area business, hiding your address is the correct and recommended setup. A service-area business that leaves its home address visible on Google Maps is violating Google's guidelines and may face listing issues.
If you want to go deeper, our article on GBP for home-based businesses walks through how to list a home-based business while keeping your address hidden.
Step 1: Go to business.google.com and sign in with the Google account linked to your GBP.
Step 2: Select your business listing from the dashboard.
Step 3: Click "Edit profile" to open your profile editor.
Step 4: Scroll to the "Location and areas" section.
Step 5: Click on "Service area." A dialog will open asking you to add the areas you serve.
Step 6: Add your service areas. You can enter cities (e.g., "Austin, TX"), counties or regions (e.g., "Travis County"), ZIP codes (e.g., "78701"), and in some markets, individual neighborhoods.
Step 7: Add all the geographic areas where you actively take jobs. Click "Save" after adding each area.
If you want to go deeper, our article on service area vs storefront setup walks through whether to list as a service area business or a storefront.
Be accurate, not aspirational. Only add areas where you genuinely take jobs. Adding large areas you do not actually serve in hopes of ranking there does not work, Google's algorithm weights proximity and relevance, and artificially inflated service areas can reduce your authority signals in your core areas.
Use the right geographic units. For most service businesses, a combination of city names and zip codes provides the clearest signal. Adding the city gets you coverage for city-name searches; adding specific zip codes helps with zip-code-level searches and gives Google more precise geographic data.
Maximum service area size: Google recommends that your service area not extend more than about 2 hours of driving time from where you are based. This is not an enforced hard limit, but exceeding reasonable geographic scope is a red flag that can harm your listing.
Overlap is fine. If a zip code is inside a city you have already added, you can add both. The redundancy does not hurt.
💡 Pro Tip: If you serve the entire metro area of a large city, add the city name plus the major suburban cities within your service zone. For a Dallas plumber, that might mean adding Dallas, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Garland, and Irving separately.
If you are a service-area business, you should hide your home or warehouse address from your GBP.
Step 1: In your GBP editor, scroll to the "Business location" section.
Step 2: Click "Clear address" or toggle off "Show business address to customers."
Step 3: Confirm that you want to hide your address. Your service area will now be the primary location signal on your listing.
Step 4: Verify that your listing now shows only your service area, no street address, on your Google Maps listing. This is the correct display for a service-area business.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Leaving a home address visible on a service-area business GBP listing. This violates Google's guidelines for businesses that serve customers exclusively at their location. Google can flag or suspend listings that display residential addresses as business locations.
Your service area settings tell Google where you serve customers, but they are not a ranking guarantee. Google still uses relevance, distance, and prominence to determine your ranking within your stated service area.
What service area settings influence: your eligibility to appear for searches from within your stated service area, the geographic range across which Google considers you a relevant result, and whether you appear in searches like "[service] in [city]" for cities you have listed.
What improves your ranking within your service area: reviews from customers located in that service area, citations mentioning your service in those cities, GBP content (services, posts, Q&A) that references those cities and services, and proximity signals from your verified business location.
📊 Flento Data: Service-area businesses with properly configured service areas (address hidden, specific cities and zip codes listed) receive 2.7x more GBP profile views from outside their immediate address location than those with address visible and no service area set.
Once your service area is correctly configured, use rank tracking to verify that you are actually appearing in searches from across your service zone.
A common surprise: many service-area businesses discover that despite listing 20 zip codes in their service area, they only rank strongly in the 5 to 8 closest to their base. The remaining zip codes require additional review building, citation work, and GBP optimization to improve.
🔥 Quick Win: Use Flento's Local Keyword Rank Tracker to run a geo-grid rank tracking report across your full service area. Overlay your service area boundaries on the grid and see exactly which zones you rank in and which need work.
Your service area can be changed at any time. If you expand into new zip codes, add them. If you stop serving an area, remove it. Keeping your service area accurate and current is part of good GBP hygiene.
How to edit your service area: follow the same steps as adding (Edit profile, Location and areas, Service area), click the X next to any area you want to remove, click "Add another location" to add new areas, and save after each change.
No service area set at all. Many service-area businesses have the address visible and no service area configured. This is the most common and most damaging mistake, these businesses are invisible outside their immediate address.
Service area set to entire state or country. Adding your entire state as a service area signals that you serve everyone everywhere, which reduces your proximity relevance in the areas where you actually work.
Address still visible alongside service area. For true service-area businesses, the address should be hidden. A visible residential address on a service-area business is a guideline violation.
Flento's Google Business Profile Optimizer keeps service area edits within Google's guidelines and flags a visible address that should be hidden before it becomes a suspension risk. The Local Keyword Rank Tracker then shows exactly which zip codes in your service area you actually rank in, so you know where to focus reviews and citation work next.

How do I add a service area to my Google Business Profile?
Sign in at business.google.com, select your listing, click "Edit profile," scroll to "Location and areas," and click "Service area." Add every city, county, or zip code where you actively take jobs, then save. If you don't have a customer-facing storefront, hide your address in the "Business location" section afterward.
Can I add a service area if I also have a storefront customers visit?
Yes. A storefront business can add a service area on top of its visible address, this is common for restaurants that deliver or retailers that also do in-home installation. The address stays visible; the service area simply extends your eligibility for "[service] near me" searches beyond your immediate location.
How many cities or zip codes should I add to my service area?
Add every area where you genuinely take jobs, not more. Google recommends staying within roughly 2 hours of driving time from your base. Padding your service area with cities you don't actually serve doesn't improve rankings there and can dilute your authority signals in the areas you do serve.
What happens if I don't set a service area at all?
If you're a service-area business and never configure this setting, your listing typically only shows your verified address (which should be hidden) with no defined territory, making you effectively invisible to customers searching from outside your immediate location. This is the single most common and most damaging service area mistake.
Does a larger service area mean better rankings?
No. A larger service area spreads your relevance and proximity signals thinner rather than strengthening them. A tightly defined, accurate service area backed by real reviews and citations from those specific areas consistently outperforms an inflated one covering an entire state.
How do I hide my address if I'm a service-area business?
In your GBP editor, go to "Business location," click "Clear address" or toggle off "Show business address to customers," and confirm. Your service area then becomes the primary location signal shown to searchers instead of a street address.
