Cannabis dispensaries face unique advertising restrictions but can still dominate local search.

Cannabis dispensaries operate under some of the most restrictive online advertising environments of any legal business. Google Ads and Meta Ads are largely off-limits. But local SEO is not advertising — it is organic visibility, and it is one of the most powerful channels available to dispensaries.
Customers searching for "dispensary near me," "weed dispensary [city]," or "cannabis store [city]" are making purchase decisions at the moment of search. Dispensaries that rank on Google Maps for these searches generate consistent walk-in and delivery traffic without any ad spend.
This guide covers the complete local SEO strategy for licensed cannabis dispensaries in legal markets.

Google's policies on cannabis advertising and Google Business Profiles are evolving. As of 2026, many legal dispensaries are successfully maintaining and ranking on GBP listings. Always keep your listing current and compliant with Google's latest policies.
Primary category: "Cannabis Dispensary" — now available as a GBP category in many US states with legal cannabis markets.
Secondary categories:
Business description: Write a compliant, professional description: "[Name] is a licensed [medical / recreational / medical and recreational] cannabis dispensary in [City, State]. We carry a curated selection of [flower, edibles, concentrates, topicals, pre-rolls, vapes, tinctures] from trusted local and regional cultivators and brands. Our trained staff provides personalized guidance for every customer. [Age verification required. Medical card required for medical-only dispensaries.]"
Hours: Keep dispensary hours perfectly accurate. Cannabis customers who drive to a closed dispensary are frustrated and unlikely to return.
Photos: Add photos of your dispensary interior (budtender counter, display cases, product presentation), exterior and signage, and any unique design elements. A welcoming, professional-looking dispensary photos set converts searchers to visitors.
Primary dispensary searches:
Product searches:
Deal and promotion searches:
Cannabis dispensary reviews that mention knowledgeable budtenders, consistent product availability, and a welcoming atmosphere are the primary decision drivers for customers choosing between nearby options.
When to ask: At checkout when the customer seems satisfied with their selection. "Did we help you find exactly what you were looking for today? If so, a quick Google review would mean a lot to us. Here's the link."
📊 Flento Data: Cannabis dispensaries with 80+ Google reviews attract 3.6x more walk-in customers from Google Maps traffic than those with fewer than 30 reviews.
🔥 Quick Win: Use Flento to automate post-visit review requests via text for customers who opt into your loyalty program and have provided a phone number.
Cannabis directories:
Weedmaps and Leafly are the primary discovery channels for cannabis customers. An active Weedmaps listing with current menu, deals, and reviews drives consistent traffic. An active Leafly listing with strain education and customer reviews builds authority with the cannabis-curious customer.
Your dispensary website needs to rank for local cannabis searches and host your online menu. Key elements:
Essential pages:
Technical SEO note: Ensure your website does not have age gates that block Google's crawler. Use JavaScript-based age verification that allows crawlers through, or implement proper technical workarounds to ensure your pages are indexed.
Blog content ideas:
Educational content builds search authority and answers the questions cannabis-curious customers are searching for. It also builds brand trust without running afoul of advertising restrictions.
Monitor monthly:
🔥 Quick Win: Use Flento to track your Google Maps ranking across your metro area. Dispensaries in multi-store markets are often surprised to find significant ranking variation between neighborhoods even a mile apart.
No Weedmaps listing or outdated menu. Weedmaps is the primary cannabis discovery channel. An outdated or missing Weedmaps listing loses customers to competitors who maintain accurate, up-to-date menus.
No first-time visitor content. Cannabis-curious customers who have never visited a dispensary are nervous. A clear, welcoming "first visit" guide on your website converts this large segment of the market.
No review strategy. Cannabis dispensaries that actively collect reviews consistently outperform those that do not, even with smaller advertising budgets.
Age gates that block Google. If your website's age gate prevents Google from crawling your pages, your site will not rank in organic search. Use compliant technical solutions that allow crawlers through while still providing legal age verification for human visitors.
Cannabis customers are searching for their next dispensary experience right now. Show up on Google Maps and Weedmaps, collect consistent reviews, and create educational content that builds trust. That drives the foot traffic and delivery orders that grow your business.
