When a family moves to a new city, a young adult opens their first bank account, or a frustrated big-bank customer looks for an alternative, they often search Google. "Credit union near me," "community bank [city]," and "free checking account near me" are searches that happen thousands of times every month.
Credit unions and community banks that rank on Google Maps with strong reviews, competitive product descriptions, and member-focused content consistently attract the most qualified new account holders without expensive television or billboard advertising. This guide covers the complete local SEO strategy for community financial institutions.
We apply a similar framework in our guide to local SEO for mortgage brokers.
Primary category: "Credit Union" for credit unions. "Bank" for community banks.
Secondary categories:
Business description: Lead with your member benefits and competitive advantages over big banks: "[Name] is a member-owned credit union in [City] serving [eligibility: residents of [County], employees of [companies], etc.] with free checking accounts, high-yield savings, auto and personal loans, mortgage products, and business banking. As a nonprofit cooperative, our profits return to members through better rates and lower fees."
Hours: Bank and credit union hours are highly specific. Include separate branch hours for different locations if applicable. Drive-through hours should be listed separately if different from lobby hours.
Services: Add every product and service:

Loan searches:
Member and service searches:
Credit union and community bank reviews that describe a loan officer who called back within an hour, a teller who remembered a member by name, or a mortgage team that closed in 21 days are the antithesis of big-bank complaints and attract members who have been burned by impersonal service.
When to ask: After a successful loan closing, account opening, or service resolution where the member expressed satisfaction.
Script: "We're so glad we could help with your [loan / account / matter]. If you have a moment, a Google review would really help other [city] residents discover us as an alternative to the big banks. Here's the link."

🔥 Quick Win: Use Flento to track your Google Maps ranking across your branch network and service area.
No individual branch GBP listings. Each physical branch location needs its own optimized GBP listing. A credit union with 5 branches needs 5 GBP profiles — one per location with that branch's specific hours, staff, and services.
No loan product pages. Members searching for auto loan rates, mortgage rates, or personal loan terms convert best on dedicated product pages with current rates, terms, and an application link.
No membership eligibility page. Many potential credit union members do not know they are eligible to join. A clear, compelling eligibility page converts interested visitors into members.
Residents in your community are searching for a better banking relationship right now. Show up on Google Maps with human-centered reviews, competitive product content, and a clear path to membership or account opening. That builds the community of members that sustains a great credit union or community bank.
