Criminal defense clients search Google in moments of crisis.

When someone is arrested, or a loved one calls from jail, the next move is almost always a Google search. "Criminal defense attorney near me," "DUI lawyer [city]," and "drug charge attorney [city]" are searches made in moments of extreme urgency. The attorney who ranks first on Google Maps gets the call.
Criminal defense is one of the most time-sensitive local search categories in all of law. A client arrested on Friday night who finds your firm through Google and reaches you immediately will hire you. A client who cannot reach anyone until Monday may already have retained someone else.
This guide covers the complete local SEO strategy for criminal defense attorneys to rank on Google Maps, capture urgent defense consultations, and build a full caseload through organic search.
The same approach carries over to neighboring categories, as our guide to local SEO for bail bonds agencies shows.
Primary category: "Criminal Justice Attorney" — the most specific category for criminal defense.
Secondary categories:
Business description: Lead with your availability and practice areas: "[Name] is an experienced criminal defense attorney in [City] representing clients in DUI/DWI, drug charges, assault, theft, sex crimes, federal crimes, expungements, and all misdemeanor and felony matters. We are available 24/7 for arrest and bond hearings. Free confidential consultations. Former prosecutor [if applicable]."
Hours: Criminal defense is one of the few legal practice areas where 24/7 availability is a genuine competitive advantage. If you are reachable after hours and on weekends for arrests and bond hearings, set your GBP to 24/7 and state this in your description.
Phone: Must be answered 24/7 or forwarded to an answering service that can reach you for urgent matters. A missed call in this category means a lost client.
Services: Add every charge type and legal matter:

Businesses in adjacent categories face many of the same ranking challenges, which we cover in local SEO for DUI attorneys.
Criminal defense reviews are read by people who are frightened and evaluating whether they can trust their freedom and reputation to this attorney. Reviews that describe successful outcomes, a lawyer who kept clients informed, and someone who was reachable in a crisis convert better than any other content.
When to ask: Immediately after case dismissal, acquittal, or a favorable plea outcome.
Script: "We are so relieved this went the way it did. Would you be willing to leave a Google review? I know this is still a sensitive topic, but you don't need to mention any case details — just share your experience working with our firm. It could help another person in your situation find the right defense."
📊 Flento Data: Criminal defense firms with 35+ Google reviews receive 2.9x more consultation calls from Google Maps traffic than those with fewer than 15 reviews.

Essential pages:
DUI page is the priority. DUI/DWI is the highest-volume criminal defense search in nearly every market. A dedicated DUI page with your track record, process, and a clear 24/7 contact option should be your first content investment.

No 24/7 availability stated. This is the single most important differentiator in criminal defense local SEO. Clients need help now, not Monday morning. State your availability explicitly everywhere.
No DUI-specific page. DUI is the most searched criminal defense matter in nearly every market. A generic "criminal defense" page cannot rank for DUI searches as effectively as a dedicated page.
Avvo profile neglected. Criminal defense clients use Avvo extensively for attorney research. An unclaimed or minimal Avvo profile misses a significant research pathway.
No emergency call language on mobile. Over 70% of criminal defense Google searches happen on mobile. A non-clickable phone number or buried contact information on mobile is a conversion failure.
Clients facing criminal charges are searching for help right now. The defense attorney who shows up on Google Maps, answers the phone 24/7, and demonstrates their credibility through reviews and case content is the one they call.
