Every local business with a website has built it on something. The three platforms that dominate small business website building, WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace, each offer a different balance of ease of use, customization, and SEO capability. And for local businesses specifically, these differences can have real ranking implications.
This guide compares all three platforms specifically from a local SEO perspective: technical capabilities, schema support, speed, control over on-page elements, and practical ranking performance. By the end, you will know which platform is the right foundation for your local search strategy.
We break down the plugins that handle schema, location pages, and reviews on WordPress in our guide to local SEO WordPress plugins.
WordPress is the world's most widely used content management system, powering roughly 43% of all websites. For local SEO specifically, WordPress provides the deepest set of tools and the most complete control over every technical ranking factor.
Local SEO strengths of WordPress:
Plugin ecosystem. The Yoast SEO, Rank Math, and All in One SEO plugins give WordPress users complete control over meta titles, meta descriptions, canonical tags, robots directives, schema markup (including LocalBusiness schema), and XML sitemap generation. These tools are among the most sophisticated SEO tools available for any platform.
Full technical control. WordPress allows you to edit your robots.txt, htaccess file, page templates, and site structure without developer restrictions. This matters for advanced technical SEO, things like hreflang for multi-language sites, custom canonical logic, or site architecture optimization.
Speed with the right setup. Out of the box, WordPress is not necessarily fast. But with a quality hosting provider (SiteGround, Kinsta, WP Engine), a lightweight theme, and a caching plugin, WordPress pages can achieve Core Web Vitals scores that rival any platform.
LocalBusiness schema. WordPress plugins make it straightforward to add complete LocalBusiness schema markup, including NAP, business hours, service area, and review aggregation, to every page.
Content and blog capability. WordPress's native blogging and content management capabilities are unmatched. For businesses investing in local content marketing (the 12-month content calendar strategy covered in a separate guide), WordPress is the most capable platform.
Weaknesses: WordPress requires more technical management than Wix or Squarespace. Hosting, security, updates, and performance optimization all require some attention. A poorly maintained WordPress site can become slow, vulnerable, and technically broken.
Best for: Local businesses that are serious about SEO, plan to invest in content marketing, want complete technical control, or are working with an SEO agency.
Wix has invested significantly in improving its SEO capabilities over the past several years, addressing many of the criticisms that made it a poor choice for SEO-focused businesses in the past. Today, Wix is a legitimate platform for local SEO, with some important caveats.
Local SEO strengths of Wix:
Built-in SEO tools. Wix's SEO Setup Checklist and Wix SEO tools cover the basics well: meta titles, descriptions, canonical tags, 301 redirects, sitemap submission, and structured data for common content types.
LocalBusiness schema support. Wix supports LocalBusiness structured data through its built-in tools, though with less granular control than WordPress plugins.
Speed improvements. Wix has significantly improved page speed through infrastructure investments. For most local business use cases, Wix pages now achieve acceptable Core Web Vitals scores.
Ease of use. Wix's visual editor is genuinely easier for non-technical business owners than WordPress. The lower maintenance burden is a real practical advantage for businesses without technical support.
Weaknesses: Wix's structured URL system is less flexible than WordPress, making it harder to create the exact URL hierarchy that sometimes benefits local SEO. Third-party SEO plugin options are limited compared to the WordPress ecosystem. Technical SEO ceiling is lower than WordPress for complex multi-location implementations.
Best for: Local businesses that want a reasonably capable SEO platform without the technical overhead of WordPress. Works well for single-location businesses with straightforward local SEO needs.
Squarespace produces some of the best-looking websites of the three platforms and requires the least technical knowledge to maintain. For local SEO, it is the most constrained option, not unusable, but with a lower ceiling than WordPress or even Wix.
Local SEO strengths of Squarespace:
Clean HTML structure. Squarespace generates clean, well-structured HTML that is easy for search engines to crawl.
Fast hosting. Squarespace's hosting infrastructure is fast and reliable by default, and Core Web Vitals performance is generally acceptable.
Basic on-page SEO control. Squarespace allows you to set meta titles and descriptions, add alt text to images, and control page URLs.
Weaknesses: Squarespace's schema markup support is limited. Adding complete LocalBusiness schema requires custom code injection, a workaround rather than a native feature. URL structure has some limitations. Redirect management is less flexible. Blog capabilities are functional but less powerful than WordPress for content marketing at scale.
Best for: Local businesses where design aesthetics are a top priority and local SEO needs are basic. Photographers, artists, boutique retailers, and creatives often do well with Squarespace. Service businesses with aggressive local SEO goals typically find it limiting.
| Feature | WordPress | Wix | Squarespace |
|---|---|---|---|
| LocalBusiness schema | Full control (plugins) | Built-in, limited control | Manual code injection |
| URL structure control | Complete | Mostly flexible | Some limitations |
| Speed (optimized) | Excellent | Good | Good |
| Content / blogging | Best in class | Good | Adequate |
| Technical SEO ceiling | Highest | Medium | Lower |
| Ease of use | Moderate | Easy | Easiest |
| Maintenance burden | Higher | Low | Lowest |
| Plugin / extension ecosystem | Vast | Limited | Very limited |
Choose WordPress if you are serious about local SEO and plan to invest in content marketing, you are working with an SEO agency who will manage technical optimization, you have or are willing to hire technical support for hosting and maintenance, or you need complete control over schema, site architecture, and technical SEO.
Choose Wix if you want a capable SEO platform without the technical overhead of WordPress, you are a single-location business with straightforward local SEO needs, or you value ease of use and a lower maintenance burden.
Choose Squarespace if design aesthetics are your top priority, your local SEO needs are basic (correct meta tags, basic schema, GBP alignment), or you are in a creative industry where portfolio presentation matters most.
📊 Flento Data: Local businesses on WordPress with properly configured LocalBusiness schema and optimized site speed rank for an average of 2.8x more local keyword combinations than comparable businesses on Squarespace with default settings.
Here is the honest truth: for most local businesses, the choice between WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace matters less than the execution of local SEO fundamentals. A well-optimized Wix site will consistently outrank a poorly optimized WordPress site.
The most important local SEO factors, Google Business Profile optimization, review strategy, citation building, and content quality, are platform-independent. Get those right first.

Is WordPress better than Wix for local SEO?
WordPress offers deeper technical control and a stronger plugin ecosystem, which matters most for businesses investing heavily in content marketing or multi-location schema needs. For a single-location business with straightforward needs, a well-maintained Wix site can rank just as well, the platform matters less than consistent execution of GBP optimization, reviews, and citations.
Can Squarespace sites rank well for local SEO?
Yes, with realistic expectations. Squarespace handles basic on-page SEO, meta titles, alt text, clean URLs, adequately, but its schema markup requires custom code injection rather than a native feature, and its ceiling for advanced technical SEO is lower than WordPress or Wix. Squarespace works well for businesses with basic local SEO needs and a strong design priority.
Does switching website platforms improve local rankings?
Rarely, on its own. The most important local ranking factors, Google Business Profile completeness, review velocity, and citation consistency, are platform-independent. A poorly optimized WordPress site will underperform a well-optimized Wix or Squarespace site. Fix the fundamentals before considering a platform migration.
Which platform is easiest for a non-technical business owner to maintain?
Squarespace requires the least technical knowledge, followed by Wix. WordPress offers the most control but requires more ongoing technical management, hosting, security updates, and performance tuning, that a non-technical owner may need help with.
Do I need a developer to add LocalBusiness schema to my website?
Not on WordPress, plugins like Yoast SEO or Rank Math add it without code. Wix supports it through built-in tools with less granular control. Squarespace requires custom code injection, which typically does need developer help unless you're comfortable editing code blocks yourself.
