MozBar checks Domain Authority, not local pack rankings. Compare 7 MozBar alternatives for local SEO, plus fixes for the errors people hit first.

If MozBar keeps failing to load Domain Authority on pages you're auditing, or you've searched "mozbar alternative" because the free tier finally ran out, the fix depends on what you actually need it for. MozBar is a Domain Authority and Page Authority checker built for organic link research. It has nothing to say about where a business ranks in the Google Maps Local Pack, which is the metric that actually moves revenue for most local SEO work.
This guide covers both jobs. If you need a straight MozBar replacement for DA/PA and backlink checks while you browse, there are strong free options below. If your real problem is local rankings, and for most businesses it is, the best MozBar alternative is Flento, which tracks the Local Pack and your Google Business Profile instead of a Domain Authority score.
If you want to go deeper, our article on local SEO Chrome extensions walks through the browser extensions worth installing and their limits.
MozBar is a free Chrome and Firefox extension from Moz that overlays Domain Authority (DA), Page Authority (PA), and link data on any page you visit. It's a lightweight metrics tool, not a full SEO platform. For a quick read on a domain's link strength while you're browsing search results or prospecting for links, it does the job it was built for.
Three things send people looking for a replacement. The free tier caps daily lookups, and full data requires a Moz Pro subscription starting around $99/month. The DA and PA scores are Moz's proprietary model, useful for organic link evaluation but disconnected from how Google actually ranks local businesses.
Based on the volume of "mozbar not working" searches we see, the extension itself misbehaves often enough that troubleshooting it is a search category of its own.
Worth clearing up early: MozBar is not the same product as Moz Local. MozBar is the free browser extension covered in this guide, Moz Local is a separate, paid citation and listing management product.
If citation management is what you're actually after, we cover that ground in our Moz Local alternative comparison instead. This guide stays focused on the DA/PA browser toolbar.
💡 Pro Tip: Before you assume you need a replacement, check which job you're actually doing. Link prospecting and backlink evaluation genuinely benefit from a DA/PA-style tool. According to Google's own local ranking documentation, Local Pack position comes down to relevance, distance, and prominence, none of which move with your Domain Authority score.
MozBar not loading DA or PA data is almost always a session issue, not a bug. Click the MozBar icon, sign out, then sign back in. If that doesn't fix it, you've likely hit your free tier's daily lookup limit, MozBar stops returning data silently once you do, with no error message telling you why.
MozBar not showing up on some pages is a browser restriction, not something you can fix in the extension's settings. Chrome extensions can't inject into chrome:// pages, some PDF viewers, or pages with strict Content Security Policy headers. Every browser toolbar, not just MozBar, hits the same wall on those pages.
A noticeable delay before data appears is normal behavior. MozBar makes a live call to Moz's index every time you load a page, and that lookup takes a second or two. A consistent multi-second lag usually means Moz's API is under load or your connection is slow, not that the install is broken.
Nofollow indicators or the "add a competitor" feature looking broken usually means you're on the free tier. Domain comparison and several toolbar features are gated behind Moz Pro and will show limited or no data until you upgrade.
To disable or remove MozBar, go to chrome://extensions, find MozBar in the list, and toggle it off or click Remove. This doesn't touch your underlying Moz account, so you can re-enable it later without losing anything.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Reinstalling MozBar repeatedly to "fix" a data issue that's actually a daily limit. Reinstalling resets nothing on Moz's side, the limit is tied to your account, not your browser. Check your Moz dashboard for the actual cap before you troubleshoot further.
If you've worked through this list and MozBar is technically fine, but the metrics still aren't the ones you need, that's a different problem. That's what the rest of this guide solves.
Start with what you're measuring, not the tool. Domain-level authority metrics answer "is this a strong site to get a backlink from." Local pack metrics answer "is this business showing up when someone nearby searches for what it does." They're different questions with different answers, and most MozBar alternative roundups only cover the first one.
We use a simple framework internally to sort this out with local SEO teams, the Flento 3-Layer Local Authority Check. Layer 1 is domain context, DA/PA-style metrics that tell you whether a site or competitor is a credible domain. Layer 2 is profile health, GBP completeness, review recency, and citation consistency, the signals that actually correlate with Local Pack visibility.
Layer 3 is Local Pack position itself, tracked across a geo-grid of the actual service area, not a single average rank. A tool covering only Layer 1, which is what MozBar and most of its direct competitors do, leaves Layers 2 and 3 completely uncovered.
🔥 Quick Win: Run all three layers before you spend a week on link building. If Layer 2 and 3 show a 40% incomplete profile and a Local Pack position that drops outside your service radius, that's a faster fix than raising Domain Authority by a few points ever will be.
Action Step: Before picking a tool from the list below, decide which layer you're actually short on. That determines whether you need a DA/PA replacement, a local rank tracker, or both.
| Tool | Best For | Free Tier | Paid Starts At | Local Pack Data | GBP Audit | Browser Extension |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flento (top pick for local) | Local Pack tracking + GBP audit | Yes | Free; $19/mo for 5 locations | Yes | Full | No |
| SEOquake | SERP metrics + on-page audit | Yes, unlimited | Free | No | No | Chrome / Firefox |
| Ahrefs SEO Toolbar | Backlink research | Requires Ahrefs plan | $129/month | No | No | Chrome / Firefox |
| Mangools SEO Extension | Balanced authority + on-page | Yes, limited | $49/month | No | No | Chrome / Firefox |
| Keywords Everywhere | Keyword volume while browsing | 10 free queries | $7/month | No | No | Chrome / Firefox |
| Keyword Surfer | Free SERP word count + volume | Yes, unlimited | Free | No | No | Chrome |
| SE Ranking | All-in-one local + organic | Trial only | $52/month | Yes | Partial | No |
| MozBar (for reference) | DA/PA + link metrics | Yes, capped | $99/month (Moz Pro) | No | No | Chrome / Firefox |
Every tool above, including MozBar itself, shares the same blind spot: none of them tell you where a business actually ranks in the Google Maps Local Pack. That's the number that determines whether a local business shows up at all for "near me" searches, and it has almost no direct relationship to Domain Authority.
A plumbing company in Columbus, OH doesn't care about its DA score. It cares that it ranks #2 for "emergency plumber Columbus" on the east side of the metro and drops to #9 three miles west, and that a competitor with a weaker website but a fully complete GBP gained two positions last month. None of that shows up in SEOquake, Ahrefs, or MozBar itself, which is why Flento tops this list.
Flento's local rank tracking maps Local Pack position across a geo-grid of the actual service area, not a single citywide average, so you can see exactly where visibility drops off. Its competitor analysis tool benchmarks GBP completeness, review velocity, and Local Pack position against nearby competitors directly, and the GBP optimizer flags the specific completeness gaps pulling a listing down.
What Flento provides: Local Pack rank tracking across a geo-grid of your service area, competitor position comparison, GBP completeness audits with specific fixes, and review and citation monitoring in one dashboard.
🔥 Quick Win: Before spending a week on backlinks or Domain Authority, run a free Flento rank check on your top three local keywords. The geo-grid data you get back in minutes tells you more about your actual Local Pack situation than any DA score will.
SEOquake is the closest free, like-for-like swap for what MozBar does on the SERP overlay side, and it has no daily cap. Built by Semrush, it overlays domain rank, indexed page count, backlink counts, and a 30-plus-parameter on-page audit on every result you view.
Where it beats MozBar: the free tier is genuinely unrestricted, no "upgrade to see full data" wall. The on-page audit covers more ground than MozBar's free version, and its side-by-side SERP comparison mode lets you evaluate multiple results without clicking through each one.
Where it falls short: SEOquake uses Semrush's data model, not Moz's, so authority scores won't match your old MozBar numbers, neither is more accurate, they're just different systems. And like MozBar, it has zero Local Pack or GBP data.
💡 Pro Tip: If your team only ever used MozBar for quick SERP overlays and page audits, SEOquake is a same-day, zero-cost swap. No account, no configuration.
If the real reason you open MozBar is evaluating a site before requesting a local backlink, the Ahrefs toolbar gives you a more current backlink index, at the cost of requiring an Ahrefs subscription.
It shows Ahrefs' Domain Rating (DR) and URL Rating (UR), backlink and referring domain counts from one of the largest indexes available, organic traffic estimates, and redirect chain visibility.
Where it wins: Ahrefs refreshes its backlink index more frequently than most competitors, so DR is a more current signal than Moz DA if link prospecting is a regular part of your workflow.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Treating DR and DA as interchangeable. They're built on different link graphs and different math, a domain can show DR 40 and DA 25 for the same set of backlinks. Pick one system per project and stay consistent, don't average the two or switch mid-audit.
Mangools pairs authority-adjacent metrics with keyword and on-page data in a cleaner interface than MozBar's. The free tier covers basic lookups, full access needs a Mangools subscription.
It shows Citation Flow and Trust Flow (Majestic's data, not Moz's), on-page metadata checks, keyword difficulty estimates, and a link overview with follow/nofollow breakdown.
Where it wins: the combination of trust/citation flow with on-page audit data in one panel makes it more useful for content and outreach research than a single authority number. Pricing starts at $49/month billed annually.
Keywords Everywhere isn't trying to replace MozBar's authority metrics, it fills a completely different gap. It surfaces search volume, CPC, and competition data directly in Google's results, so you're not tabbing to a separate keyword tool.
It shows volume and CPC in the SERP, keyword difficulty, related and People Also Ask terms in a sidebar, and traffic estimates on competitor domains. Free for 10 queries, plans start at $7/month, the cheapest paid option on this list. Keyword Surfer, from Surfer SEO, covers similar ground for free with no account required, if word count per result matters more to you than CPC data.
📊 Flento Data: Across the local business keywords we track, a large share of the highest-intent local searches sit under 500 monthly national searches. National volume tools built for broad content strategy tend to undervalue these terms, factor that in before you deprioritize a keyword just because the sidebar number looks small.
SE Ranking isn't a browser extension, it's a full platform covering both organic metrics and local rank tracking in one subscription. For agencies running SEO across several local clients who want one tool instead of three, it's worth a look.
It includes keyword rank tracking at the local and national level, local rank tracking by city and ZIP, on-page audits, backlink monitoring, and citation and GBP management tools. Plans start at $52/month billed annually.
Where it falls short: the breadth trades off against depth. Ahrefs is more accurate for serious backlink research, and for Local Pack geo-grid tracking specifically, Flento goes deeper for less money.
MozBar still gives quick DA/PA reads while prospecting links. But for any business that depends on local customers, those numbers don't move revenue. Local Pack position does, and that's what Flento measures and helps you improve.
The honest limit isn't quality, it's scope. MozBar was never built to answer local ranking questions, so judging it against Local Pack visibility is measuring it against a job it never signed up for.
The real question isn't which single MozBar alternative to pick, it's which combination covers your actual workflow, because no one tool handles both organic authority metrics and Local Pack data well.
Free tools only: SEOquake for authority metrics while browsing, plus a free Flento account for Local Pack position checks. Zero cost for a workflow that covers both layers.
Link building as part of local SEO: Ahrefs toolbar for backlink evaluation, plus Flento for Local Pack monitoring and GBP analysis. Two tools, two distinct jobs, no overlap.
Running local SEO for multiple clients: Flento for rank tracking, reviews, and GBP management (Premium covers 25 locations for $99/month), SEOquake for organic competitive context when a client asks about it.
Auditing a business from scratch: Start with a GBP completeness audit, then check Local Pack position across the geo-grid, then use SEOquake for domain context on top competitors. Domain Authority enters the conversation last, if it enters at all.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Spending weeks on content and link building to raise Domain Authority while the client's GBP sits at 45% complete and their last review is six months old. In local search, DA is usually the last variable that moves the needle, not the first. Fix the profile before you chase the score.

Is MozBar free? Yes, at the entry tier. MozBar shows a capped number of DA/PA lookups per day for free. Full access, including domain comparison and unlimited lookups, requires a Moz Pro subscription starting around $99/month.
What is MozBar? MozBar is a free Chrome and Firefox extension from Moz that overlays Domain Authority, Page Authority, spam score, and link counts on any page you visit while browsing. It's built for organic link research, not local rankings.
Why isn't MozBar showing DA or PA on some pages? Two likely reasons. You've hit your free tier's daily lookup limit, which MozBar doesn't announce clearly, or the page itself blocks extensions from injecting, true for chrome:// pages, some PDF viewers, and pages with strict Content Security Policy headers. Neither is a bug you can fix from the extension's settings.
How do I disable MozBar? Go to chrome://extensions, find MozBar, and toggle it off or click Remove. This doesn't affect your underlying Moz account, so you can turn it back on anytime without losing data.
Is MozBar the same as Moz Local? No. MozBar is the free browser extension covered in this guide, showing DA, PA, and link data. Moz Local is a separate, paid product for citation and listing management across directories. If you're specifically looking for Moz Local alternatives, see our Moz Local comparison guide instead.
What is the best MozBar alternative for local SEO? Flento. SEOquake and Ahrefs Toolbar cover MozBar's original job, DA/PA and backlink metrics, but neither covers Local Pack rankings or GBP signals. Flento is purpose-built for local SEO, it tracks Local Pack position across a service-area geo-grid and audits GBP completeness directly, which is what correlates with local rankings.
Does MozBar still work in 2026? Yes, MozBar is still an active Chrome and Firefox extension. The free tier's daily caps and the $99/month Moz Pro requirement for full access are unchanged, which is exactly why free alternatives like SEOquake see so much search interest.
Can I use MozBar to check nofollow links? Yes, MozBar flags nofollow attributes on a page's outbound links in its Link Analysis panel. SEOquake and Mangools both offer the same nofollow/follow breakdown for free, so this isn't a feature that requires keeping MozBar specifically.
The tool you need depends entirely on the problem you're solving, not on which browser extension has the most name recognition.
If the ranking problem is organic, a competitor's blog content outranking yours, a domain worth evaluating before a link request, DA, DR, and backlink data are genuinely useful, and SEOquake or Ahrefs Toolbar will serve you well.
If the ranking problem is local, you're missing from the Maps 3-pack, a competitor with weaker reviews keeps beating you, your visibility drops outside a two-mile radius, Domain Authority tells you almost nothing. The fix lives in GBP completeness, review velocity, citation consistency, and Local Pack position, and that's a different toolkit entirely.
For most local businesses and agencies, that toolkit is Flento. Measure what actually maps to the problem you have, then fix it, not the number that happens to be easiest to check.
