Citation spam, fake NAP submissions, and malicious backlinks can tank local rankings fast. Here's how to recognize a negative SEO attack early.
In six years of building GBP automation systems, I've run the same diagnostic on hundreds of business profiles that suddenly dropped in rankings for no obvious reason. Most of the time, it's a normal explanation: a stale listing, a slipping review score, a competitor simply doing better work. Every so often, though, the cause is something the business owner never considered, a deliberate negative SEO attack aimed at their citations, their backlink profile, or their Google Business Profile itself.
Many owners also ask about citation spam attacks, which we break down separately.
Negative SEO against a local business typically targets three areas: citation accuracy across directories, backlink profile integrity, and Google Business Profile data itself, rather than a single point of attack. This is distinct from a review-bombing incident, which is its own well-documented problem tied specifically to fake or coordinated negative reviews. This is about attacks on the infrastructure underneath your rankings, not the reviews sitting on top of them.
The three most common attack surfaces I see:
A dental practice in Columbus, OH I audited last year saw its Local Pack ranking drop from position 3 to unranked over about six weeks. The cause turned out to be a wave of citation submissions across low-quality directories listing a slightly altered address, enough to create a NAP consistency problem that confused Google's confidence in the business's real location.
Action Step: If your ranking dropped sharply without an obvious internal cause (a review issue, a profile change you made), check your citation consistency before assuming it's simply competition.
Citation spam happens when someone deliberately submits incorrect or duplicate business information to directories under your business name, creating NAP inconsistencies that confuse Google's local ranking signals. This is different from organic citation drift, where directories simply go stale over time. It's deliberate submission of bad data, often across dozens of directories in a short window.
The mechanics are simple enough that this doesn't require much technical sophistication from whoever's doing it. Most citation directories accept business submissions with minimal verification, so someone with basic information about your business (name, general location, phone number) can submit a slightly altered version to 30 or 40 directories in an afternoon.
What makes this effective as an attack, rather than just annoying, is that Google's local ranking algorithm weighs proximity, relevance, and prominence, and NAP inconsistency directly undermines the prominence and trust signals tied to your listing. A business with conflicting address information across the web looks less reliable to Google's systems, even if your actual Google Business Profile is accurate.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Assuming citation inconsistency is always accidental. A slow drift of a few outdated listings over years is normal. A sudden spike of 20+ new, incorrect submissions within a short window is a different pattern entirely.
A sudden spike of low-quality, spammy backlinks pointing at your website, often from unrelated foreign-language sites or clearly automated link networks, is a recognizable negative SEO pattern distinct from normal organic link growth. For local businesses specifically, this sometimes targets not just the website but the URL tied to your Google Business Profile as well.
This one is genuinely harder to pull off effectively than citation spam, since Google's core algorithm has gotten better at ignoring obviously spammy links rather than penalizing sites for having them. That said, I've seen cases where a sudden link spike coincided with a ranking drop closely enough that it was worth investigating, even if the backlinks themselves weren't the sole cause, which is exactly why quality local link building matters as a baseline you can compare against.
Signs worth checking in your backlink profile:
💡 Pro Tip: Don't panic over a handful of odd backlinks. Every website accumulates some spammy links over time simply by existing on the internet. The pattern that matters is a sudden, concentrated spike, not background noise.
Someone submitting false edits to your Google Business Profile through the crowd-sourced "Suggest an Edit" system, changing your hours, address, phone number, or category without your knowledge, is a less common but genuinely disruptive form of local negative SEO. Because Google's system allows public suggestions to sometimes go through with limited verification, this can quietly break your listing's accuracy for days or weeks before you notice.
I've seen this happen to a retail client in Chicago whose hours were changed to show "permanently closed" for about ten days before the owner noticed the sudden drop in foot traffic and caught the error. Nobody had reported it to her directly. She only found it by checking her own listing after wondering why a regular customer mentioned finding the store "closed" online.
Checking for this doesn't require anything fancy:
Action Step: Check your live listing today, not from your dashboard, but the way a customer sees it after a fresh Google search.
A single citation error, one odd backlink, or a minor GBP discrepancy is almost always coincidence, not an attack, and treating every anomaly as a deliberate negative SEO campaign wastes energy better spent elsewhere. The pattern that actually signals an attack involves multiple, simultaneous anomalies concentrated in a short time window.
Here's what actually distinguishes an attack pattern from normal noise:
📊 Flento Data: Across the citation monitoring Flento runs for US local businesses, roughly 1 in 12 sudden multi-week ranking drops traced back to a citation inconsistency spike rather than a review, content, or algorithm-related cause.
I know it's tempting to assume the worst the moment something looks off. In my experience, most anomalies are still just normal internet noise. It's the cluster, not the single data point, that tells you something deliberate might be happening.
Once you've confirmed a genuine pattern, the first response is documentation, not panic: screenshot every anomaly, timestamp it, and begin correcting the underlying data before worrying about who did it or why. Chasing the source of an attack rarely produces anything actionable quickly, and it delays the fixes that actually restore your rankings.
The practical order of operations:
This isn't a one-time fix. In my experience, businesses that get hit once are worth monitoring more closely going forward, since whatever made them a target (a competitive category, a visible ranking position) usually hasn't changed.
Done? If citation spam turns out to be your main issue, the next step is a full directory cleanup, which deserves its own dedicated process.
Q: How common is negative SEO against small local businesses? A: It's less common than the reasons rankings usually drop (algorithm updates, content decay, review issues), but it's real and worth ruling out when other explanations don't fit, particularly for businesses in competitive categories.
Q: Can a competitor really tank my rankings with fake citations? A: A concentrated citation spam campaign can create enough NAP inconsistency to hurt your local ranking signals, though it's rarely a total kill shot on its own. It's usually one contributing factor among several.
Q: Is negative SEO the same thing as review bombing? A: No. Review bombing specifically targets your star rating and review content with fake or coordinated negative reviews. Negative SEO in the sense covered here targets citations, backlinks, and GBP data, the infrastructure behind your rankings rather than the reviews sitting on top of them.
Q: Should I use Google's disavow tool right away if I spot a backlink spike? A: Not immediately. Confirm the spike is genuinely low-quality and manipulative first, since Google's algorithm already discounts most spammy links automatically, and disavowing legitimate links by mistake can hurt more than it helps.
Q: How do I even find out my business was submitted to directories I never signed up for? A: Running a local citation audit across major directories is the most reliable way to surface unauthorized or altered submissions you wouldn't otherwise know about.
Q: Can GBP's Suggest an Edit feature really be abused this easily? A: Yes, to a degree. Google does have safeguards, but crowd-sourced edits can occasionally go through with limited verification, which is why checking your live listing periodically matters.
Q: What's the single best early-warning sign of a negative SEO attack? A: A ranking drop that doesn't correlate with anything you changed, combined with a citation or backlink anomaly appearing in the same window. Either signal alone is common. Both together, at the same time, is worth investigating.
The Columbus dental practice never would have connected their ranking drop to citation spam without actually running a comparison across their directory listings, since nothing on their own Google Business Profile had changed. That gap, between "something's wrong" and "here's exactly what changed and where," is where most businesses lose weeks they don't get back.
Flento's AI Local SEO Software monitors citation consistency, ranking movement, and profile changes together, so an anomaly in one area gets flagged against what's happening in the others instead of sitting in isolation. That's the correlation that actually separates coincidence from a real attack pattern.
Will this guarantee you'll never see a ranking drop again? No. Anyone who tells you otherwise is oversimplifying. But it puts you in a position to catch a real problem within days instead of months. Try Flento free → and get that visibility running today.
