GBP calls are often your highest-converting leads. Here's how to track every call for free and measure the true ROI of your local SEO.
A customer finds your Google Business Profile, sees your phone number, and calls. That call might become a $500 job, a $5,000 contract, or a long-term client relationship. But if you are like most local businesses, you have no idea that the call came from your GBP. You answer "Smith Plumbing, how can I help?" and the opportunity is captured, but the attribution is lost.
Call tracking from your Google Business Profile closes that gap. With the right setup, you can count exactly how many calls come from your GBP each month, what those calls convert to, and how your GBP's call volume changes as you optimize your listing. This guide covers every method, from completely free options to affordable paid solutions.
We break down how to track calls from local search without paying for CallRail in our guide to alternatives to CallRail.
Most local businesses have no idea which marketing activities drive their phone calls. They know their phone rings, but they cannot tell whether a call came from Google Maps, their website, a Facebook ad, a Yelp listing, or a business card from 2019.
This attribution problem makes it impossible to accurately calculate the ROI of your local SEO investment. Without knowing how many calls come from your GBP, you cannot prove the value of your GBP optimization to yourself or clients, prioritize your time between different marketing channels, know whether a GBP optimization actually increased call volume, or justify continued investment in local SEO with confidence.
Call tracking solves this.

Google provides basic call volume data directly in your GBP Insights dashboard. This is completely free and requires no additional setup.
How to access it:
What it shows: total call volume from your GBP listing over the selected period, a daily call breakdown, and some time-of-day distribution data.
Limitations: GBP Insights call data only captures calls initiated through the "Call" button directly on your GBP listing in Google Maps or Search. It does not capture calls where the customer found your number on your GBP and dialed it manually from their dial pad. It also does not show you the outcome of those calls, you know the call happened, but not whether it converted.
Use case: GBP Insights call data is your baseline. It gives you a free starting point for understanding call volume from Google without any additional setup.

If your GBP links to a website with a click-to-call phone number, you can track calls that originate from GBP website clicks using Google Tag Manager and GA4, completely free.
Setup:
What this captures: Calls that originated from your GBP website button and then clicked your phone number on your website. This is indirect attribution but useful for seeing the GBP-to-website-to-call flow.
Google Voice is a free service that provides a local phone number that forwards to your real business number. You can add your Google Voice number to your GBP and use it exclusively for GBP calls.
Setup:
What this gives you: Google Voice's web interface shows your call history, every call to your GBP number appears in the log with date, time, and caller number. You can manually count calls per month from this log.
Limitations: Google Voice is not designed as a professional call tracking solution. The log data must be reviewed manually, there are no reporting or analytics features, and the call quality is generally lower than a dedicated business phone line. It is a free workaround, not an ideal solution.
Use case: Perfect for very small businesses and solo operators who just need a way to tell "did my GBP generate any calls this month?" without spending anything.
For businesses that want accurate, automatic, reportable call tracking with attribution, a dedicated call tracking tool is the right solution. These tools are not free, but they are inexpensive, typically $15 to $50 per month, and the data they provide is worth significantly more than that cost.
How it works:
What to look for in a call tracking tool: local area code numbers rather than toll-free, instant call forwarding with no degradation in call quality, monthly call reports, integration with GA4 or your CRM (optional but valuable), and call recording for quality review.
📊 Flento Data: Local businesses that implement dedicated call tracking discover their GBP generates an average of 34% of all inbound calls, consistently the highest single call source for businesses with optimized GBP listings.
Once you have call volume data from your GBP, use it to:
Calculate your GBP ROI. If your GBP generates 45 calls per month, and your close rate is 40%, and your average job value is $350, your GBP is generating $6,300 per month in new revenue. If you are spending $150/month on call tracking and local SEO tools, your ROI is 4,100%.
Measure the impact of GBP optimizations. Before you add new photos, update your categories, or change your business description, note your current monthly call volume. Track the change in the following month. This is how you prove which GBP optimizations actually drive results.
Identify your peak call hours. Call time-of-day data shows when your GBP generates the most calls. This helps you ensure staff is available to answer during peak GBP call hours.
Track call quality alongside call volume. If your calls increase but your close rate drops, something about the caller intent has changed, maybe a new keyword is bringing in less qualified leads. Call volume + close rate together tell the complete story.
🔥 Quick Win: Use Flento to track your GBP ranking changes alongside your call volume data. When you see a ranking improvement on Flento's geo-grid and a corresponding call volume increase in your tracking tool, you have proved the direct connection between local SEO and business results.
One common mistake when implementing call tracking: adding multiple phone numbers to a GBP listing to try to track different sources. This creates NAP inconsistency that can hurt your rankings.
The correct approach: One tracking number per GBP listing. This number appears on your GBP and forwards to your real number. Your real number continues to appear on your website and other directories. You track GBP calls through the tracking number and website calls through GTM/GA4 phone click tracking.

How can I track calls from my Google Business Profile for free?
Start with GBP Insights, it shows total call volume from the "Call" button on your listing at no cost and no setup. For more detail, add a free Google Voice number as your GBP phone number and review its call log manually. Neither is a full tracking solution, but both are genuinely free starting points.
What is Google Business Profile tracking?
GBP tracking generally refers to monitoring the performance data Google provides for your listing, calls, direction requests, website clicks, and search queries that triggered your profile, all found under GBP Insights. Call tracking specifically is the subset focused on knowing how many calls originated from your GBP listing and what those calls led to.
Do I need paid call tracking software, or is the free method enough?
Free methods (GBP Insights, Google Voice) tell you roughly how many calls happened. Paid call tracking software gives you exact per-call data, recordings, and reporting you can act on with confidence. If you're a solo operator just curious whether your GBP works at all, free is enough. If you're actively investing in local SEO and need to justify that spend, paid tracking pays for itself quickly.
Will adding a call tracking number hurt my Google Business Profile ranking?
No, as long as you use exactly one phone number on your listing at a time, the tracking number configured to forward to your real business line. Adding multiple different numbers to try to track separate sources creates NAP inconsistency, which can hurt rankings. One tracking number, correctly forwarded, is safe.
