Nearly every rejected description contains a URL, a phone number, a price or the word best. Here is what actually triggers rejections, how to isolate the offending phrase, and what passes first time.
You write a business description, submit it, and days later it is still not showing. Or it appears briefly and reverts. Or you get a rejection with a policy reference that explains nothing about which sentence caused the problem.
Description rejections are among the more frustrating profile issues because the feedback is vague and the fix is usually one specific phrase you cannot identify from the error message.
This guide covers what actually triggers a rejection, how to find the offending element, and how to write a description that passes on the first attempt.

Descriptions are rejected mainly for promotional content, URLs, phone numbers, pricing claims and unsupported superlatives rather than for anything about your business itself.
Google treats the description as informational space, not advertising space, and enforces that fairly strictly.
The common triggers:
The URL rule catches most people. Including your own website address seems harmless and is one of the most reliable ways to have a description rejected.
🛠️ Action Step: Read your description and delete every URL, phone number, price and superlative. That resolves the large majority of rejections without any further diagnosis.
We break down why profile edits get stuck or reverted and how to fix them in our guide to pending and reverted GBP edits.
Find the problem by resubmitting a deliberately minimal description and adding content back in stages, because Google will not tell you which sentence failed.
This is tedious and it works, and there is no faster method.
The process:
Allow time between attempts. Repeated rapid resubmissions can slow the review process rather than speed it up, and can occasionally draw wider scrutiny to the listing.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Rewriting the whole description repeatedly and resubmitting each version. You learn nothing about which element failed and each cycle costs days.
Write plainly about what you do, who you serve and where, in factual language with no promotion, and it will almost always publish without issue.
A description that passes:
"Family-run plumbing company serving residential and light commercial customers across Columbus and the surrounding suburbs. Services include emergency repairs, water heater installation, drain cleaning and repiping. Licensed and insured, in business since 2004. Spanish spoken."
Why it works:
Notice what is absent: no "we pride ourselves," no "best in Columbus," no "call today for a free quote." None of it would help anyway.
💡 Pro Tip: Put your most searched service in the first sentence. The description is truncated early in display, and the opening carries the most weight both for readers and for relevance.
If a plain factual description still fails, the problem is usually the listing rather than the wording, particularly if the profile is suspended, unverified or under review.
Owners can spend weeks editing text when the listing itself is the issue.
Check for:
Third-party edits are worth checking specifically. If your description reverts rather than being rejected, someone or something else may be editing the profile. That is a different problem with a different fix.
Write for the first 250 characters or so, because that is roughly what displays before truncation and most readers never expand it.
The field accepts substantially more, but display is limited.
Practical guidance:
A shorter accurate description outperforms a longer padded one, both for approval and for the reader who is scanning.
📊 Flento Data: Across local profiles, descriptions that state services plainly in the opening sentence correlate with better profile engagement than those opening with company history or mission language.
Treat the description as a relevance and conversion field rather than a ranking lever, because it contributes context but will not overcome a wrong category.
It is worth writing well and it is not where rankings are won.
What it contributes:
What it does not do:
Guidance on the fields that do more heavy lifting is in the GBP optimization checklist.
🔥 Quick Win: If your description opens with when the company was founded, rewrite the first sentence to name your main service and city instead. That one change usually improves both approval odds and engagement.

Q: Why does Google keep rejecting my business description? A: Most commonly for a URL, phone number, price, promotional phrase or unsupported superlative. Google treats the description as informational rather than advertising space and enforces that fairly strictly.
Q: Can I include my website address in the GBP description? A: No. URLs are one of the most reliable causes of rejection. Your website already appears in its own field on the profile, so including it in the description adds nothing.
Q: How do I work out which part of my description was rejected? A: Submit a minimal factual version, wait for it to publish, then add content back one sentence at a time. The last addition before failure is the problem. There is no faster diagnostic method.
Q: What if a plain factual description still will not publish? A: The issue is probably the listing rather than the text. Check for suspension, incomplete verification, a pending review or a conflicting duplicate listing.
Q: How long should a Google Business Profile description be? A: Write for roughly the first 250 characters, since that is about what displays before truncation. A shorter accurate description outperforms a padded one for both approval and readers.
Q: Does the description affect rankings? A: It contributes relevance context but is not a significant ranking lever, and it will not override an incorrect primary category. Fix the category first, then write the description well.
Nearly every rejected description contains a URL, a phone number, a price or the word "best." Strip those four things out and most of these problems disappear without any further investigation.
Write plainly: what you do, who you serve, where, and one genuine differentiator. Put the main service in the first sentence because the rest gets truncated anyway.
