Neither format ranks better, and neither extends your reach. Here is which one describes your business more accurately, the size mistake both share, and what actually moves visibility outward.
When you set up a service area on Google Business Profile you get two options: draw a radius around your location, or name specific cities, counties and postcodes. Owners pick one more or less at random, and the choice quietly shapes how Google understands your business.
Neither option magically extends your reach. What they do is describe your scope, and a description that matches reality serves you better than one that flatters it. The interesting question is which format communicates that reality more precisely.
This guide covers what service areas actually do, when a radius is the better choice, when named places win, and the mistakes that make either setting counterproductive.
We explain how to expand your Google Maps ranking radius in a dedicated guide.
A closely related question is answered in using customer data to find your real service area.
If your business sits close to this field, the breakdown of local SEO for farm supply and feed stores is a useful comparison.
A service area tells Google where you are willing to travel, which affects how your business is understood but does not directly extend your ranking reach into those places.
This is the misconception worth clearing first. Adding a city to your service area does not make you rank there. Proximity is calculated from the searcher to your business location, and Google's guidance on improving local ranking treats distance as a genuine factor.
What a service area does:
What it does not do:
⚠️ Common Mistake: Adding twenty cities in the hope of ranking in all of them. It does not work, and an implausibly broad area makes your scope less meaningful rather than more.
Choose a radius when your service boundary is genuinely distance-based, such as a delivery, mobile or emergency service where drive time is what limits you.
A radius describes a business that thinks in travel time rather than in place names.
A radius suits:
The advantage is honesty and simplicity. If you will drive thirty minutes in any direction, a radius says exactly that without you having to enumerate every suburb.
The disadvantage is imprecision. A radius drawn across a bay, a mountain, or a state line includes places you would never actually serve.
💡 Pro Tip: If your radius includes water, a national park or another state you are not licensed in, switch to named places. Geography that a circle handles badly is a strong signal to enumerate instead.
Choose named cities, counties or postcodes when your service boundary follows administrative or licensing lines rather than distance.
Named places describe a business that thinks in jurisdictions.
Named places suit:
The advantage is precision. You control exactly what is included, and you can exclude a neighbouring county you are not licensed in.
The disadvantage is maintenance. Lists go stale as businesses expand, and a long list is tedious to keep accurate.
🛠️ Action Step: Ask yourself how you answer the phone when someone asks whether you cover their area. If you answer with a drive time, use a radius. If you answer with a list of towns, use named places.
Neither format ranks better than the other, so the correct choice is whichever describes your genuine scope more accurately.
There is no evidence that Google rewards one input format over the other. Both feed the same understanding of where you operate. What varies is how faithfully each one represents your business.
Where the difference shows up:
The practical guidance is boring and correct: pick the format that lets you describe your actual scope with the least distortion, then keep it accurate.
📊 Flento Data: Across service-area profiles, changes to the service area setting rarely move rankings on their own. The businesses that see improvement are those where the change accompanies genuine local content and reviews from the areas concerned.
Keep your service area to what you would genuinely accept work in, typically no more than about two hours of travel, regardless of which format you choose.
Over-claiming is the failure mode shared by both options and it is extremely common.
Signals your area is too large:
Why it matters: an area you would not actually serve tells Google very little about where you belong, and it produces enquiries you have to turn down, which wastes your time and occasionally earns you a poor review.
The counterintuitive advice is that narrowing an over-broad service area often coincides with better results, because the remaining area is a more coherent signal.
To genuinely rank in an area beyond your immediate vicinity you need local content and local reviews from that area, not a larger service area setting.
This is the part that does the work, and it is why service area configuration disappoints people who expected more from it.
What moves visibility outward:
The mechanics of building presence in a market you are not physically in are covered in local SEO for businesses that serve two cities.
🔥 Quick Win: Count how many of your reviews mention the outer areas of your service area by name. For most businesses the answer is close to zero, and that gap explains the visibility gap far better than the service area setting does.
Flento shows you where your visibility actually reaches, which is the only way to tell whether your service area setting reflects reality or aspiration.
Local Keyword Rank Tracker runs geo-grid scans across your stated service area, showing exactly where you stop appearing. That boundary is your real service area, whatever the setting says.
Google Business Profile Optimizer flags service area and profile configuration problems, including areas that look implausible for your business type.
Business Listing Management Software keeps your details consistent across directories, which matters more for service-area businesses since you have no displayed address anchoring you.

Q: Does a radius or a named-city service area rank better on Google? A: Neither ranks better. Both feed the same understanding of your operating scope. Choose whichever describes your genuine service boundary more accurately, then keep it current.
Q: Will adding more cities to my service area help me rank in them? A: No. Service areas describe scope rather than extending reach. Ranking in a further area requires local content and reviews from that area, not a longer list.
Q: How large should a service area be? A: Roughly what you would genuinely travel, usually no more than about two hours. Areas you would decline work in make the setting less meaningful and generate enquiries you have to turn away.
Q: Should a mobile business use a radius? A: Usually yes, since a mobile business is limited by drive time rather than by administrative boundaries. Switch to named places if the circle would include water, another state, or areas you are not licensed for.
Q: Can I change my service area without affecting my rankings? A: Changing it is low-risk and does not typically cause ranking loss. Narrowing an over-broad area is often beneficial, because the remaining area is a more coherent signal.
Q: Do I need to hide my address to use a service area? A: Not necessarily. Businesses that serve customers both at their premises and at customer locations can display an address and set a service area. Hide the address only if customers never come to you.
This setting attracts more strategising than it deserves. It is a description, not a lever, and the right answer is whichever format lets you describe your real scope most honestly.
The work that actually extends your reach sits elsewhere: a genuine page for the areas you want, and reviews from customers who live there.
