Your local SEO agency just sent you a monthly rank tracking report. There is a grid with colors, numbers, and a map. There are charts showing position changes. There are competitor comparisons and review metrics. If you have never seen one of these before, it can be hard to know where to look first, what the numbers actually mean, and whether things are going well or poorly.
This guide is written for business owners and agency clients who want to understand exactly what their keyword ranking tracking report is telling them, and how to use that understanding to have a productive conversation with their agency.
We break down how to track rankings by zip code in our guide to zip code rank tracking.
A local rank tracking report shows you how your business ranks on Google Maps across your service area for specific search keywords. It is different from an organic search ranking report, which tracks your position in Google's blue-link results.
Your Google Maps ranking changes depending on where the searcher is located. A customer searching for "plumber near me" from one neighborhood sees different results than a customer searching the same thing from a neighborhood five miles away. A rank tracking report maps your visibility across all of those different locations simultaneously.
The goal of the report is to answer one question: where does your business show up on Google Maps, and where does it not?

The most important visual in most local rank tracking reports is the geo-grid. This is a grid of dots overlaid on a map of your service area. Each dot represents a simulated Google Maps search from that specific location. The number on or color of each dot shows your ranking at that point.
How to read the geo-grid: Green dots with low numbers (1, 2, 3) mean you rank in the top 3 results, you are in the Local Pack, the most visible position, and most customers never scroll past the top 3. Yellow or orange dots (4 to 7) mean you rank but are not in the top 3, customers who scroll may find you, but most will not. Red dots (8+) or grey dots mean you are not ranking visibly in this area, customers searching from here are very unlikely to find you.
What a good geo-grid looks like: mostly green in the areas closest to your business address, with some yellow in the outer areas of your service zone. Pure green everywhere is an achievable goal over time.
What a concerning geo-grid looks like: red or grey in areas close to your business, or a competitor's geo-grid that is greener than yours across your target service area.
📊 Flento Data: Businesses that move from an average position of 6.2 to 3.1 across their geo-grid see an average 78% increase in Google Maps profile visits and 52% more phone calls per month.
The number on each geo-grid point is your ranking for that search keyword at that location. Position 1 means you are the first business Google shows. Position 7 means you are the seventh business listed, unlikely to be seen without scrolling.
Rule of thumb: position 1 to 3 means you're in the Local Pack, maximum visibility. Position 4 to 7 puts you in "near pack" territory, visible but not prominent. Position 8 or worse means you're effectively invisible to most searchers from that location.
The goal of local SEO is to move as many grid points from orange and red into green, not just at your address, but across your entire service area.
Most rank tracking reports include a comparison showing how your positions have changed since last month. This is often shown as a separate map with arrows or color coding: a green up arrow means your position improved (the number went down, lower is better), a red down arrow means your position declined, and neutral or flat means no significant change.
Key question to ask when you see declining positions: did anything change last month, fewer reviews, a GBP suspension, a competitor nearby who is actively building reviews? Position declines usually have explanations that guide the next actions.
Many rank tracking reports include a section showing how your top local competitors rank on the same geo-grid. This is some of the most valuable data in the report.
What to look for: which competitor consistently outranks you, and in which specific areas, whether there are areas where you outrank all competitors, and whether a specific competitor is gaining ground month over month.
When you see a competitor consistently outranking you in a specific zip code or neighborhood, the right response is to investigate. Do they have more reviews? Are they physically located closer? Do they have a more complete GBP? The answers shape your next month's action plan.
Your rank tracking report will typically include your current review count, average star rating, and the month-over-month change in both.
Why this is in a rank tracking report: reviews are one of Google's most significant local ranking factors. Businesses with more reviews and higher ratings consistently outrank those with fewer reviews, all else being equal.
What to look for: whether your review count is growing every month (if it's flat, your team needs a more systematic review request process), whether your average rating is trending up, stable, or declining (a declining rating signals a need to improve service quality or respond better to negative reviews), and how your review count and rating compare to your top competitor. If they have 200 reviews and you have 40, that gap is directly contributing to any ranking disadvantage.
🔥 Quick Win: Flento's Local Keyword Rank Tracker tracks your review count and velocity alongside your geo-grid rankings so you can see the direct relationship between your review building activity and your ranking improvements over time.
Your report will show your rankings broken down by keyword. A plumbing company might track "plumber near me," "emergency plumber [city]," and "water heater installation [city]" as three separate keyword ranking reports.
Each keyword may have a different geo-grid because different searches surface different competitive sets. You might rank in the top 3 for "plumber near me" but position 6 for "water heater installation," because the competitive landscape for that more specific term is different.
What to focus on: prioritize keywords that have the most commercial intent, people searching these are ready to hire. For most local service businesses, the most important keywords are your primary service category plus "near me" and your primary service category plus your city name.
A well-designed rank tracking report ends with a plain-English summary and a clear action plan for the coming month. This section should answer what improved this month and why, what declined or stayed flat and what the likely causes are, and what the 2 to 3 most important actions are for next month.
If your report does not include this section, ask your agency to add it. The best rank tracking report is one that clearly explains what the data means and what to do next.
After reviewing your rank tracking report, come to your next agency meeting with these questions: "Which zip codes are our highest priority for improvement this month?" "How does our review count compare to the top-ranking competitor in our weakest areas?" "What specific actions from last month drove the improvements we see?" and "What would it take to get from our current average position to top 3 across the full service area?"

What is a keyword ranking tracking report?
A keyword ranking tracking report shows your Google Maps position for specific search terms, broken down by location across your service area, rather than a single average number. Because Google Maps rankings shift based on where the searcher is standing, a proper report shows a geo-grid of positions instead of one number that hides where you're actually invisible.
Why does my ranking differ across the geo-grid?
Google Maps rankings are heavily influenced by proximity, so your position naturally gets weaker the farther a simulated search point is from your business address. A geo-grid report shows this variation directly, which is why a business can rank #1 near its own office and #9 just a few miles away in the same service area.
How often should I review my rank tracking report?
Monthly is standard for most local businesses, frequent enough to catch declining trends early, infrequent enough that month-over-month changes are meaningful rather than daily noise. Competitive markets or businesses actively working through a recovery plan sometimes review biweekly.
What's a good average position to aim for?
Position 1 to 3 across most of your service area is the goal, since that's the Local Pack, the most visible placement on Google Maps. A realistic milestone for most businesses is moving from a scattered mix of positions into consistent green (1 to 3) within the zones closest to your business, then expanding that green outward over time.
My rank tracking report shows a decline. What should I check first?
Check for three things in order: any recent change to your Google Business Profile (category, hours, name), whether a nearby competitor has had a recent surge in reviews, and your own review velocity over the last 30 to 60 days. These three account for most unexplained ranking declines.
