Your Google Maps ranking is not a single number. It changes across every zip code in your service area.

Most local business owners think of their Google Maps ranking as a single position. "We rank #2 for plumbers in Phoenix." But that is not how local search works. Your ranking on Google Maps changes based on where the searcher is located — and those changes can be dramatic.
A plumber in north Phoenix might rank #1 for customers searching from a neighborhood one mile from their shop and rank #8 for the same search from a zip code just six miles away. Without zip code level rank tracking, that plumber would never know they were invisible to half their service area.
This guide explains how zip code rank tracking works, why it matters for every local SEO strategy, and how to use it to identify and fix the gaps in your local visibility.
If this applies to you, learn how to read a local rank tracking report.
Google's local search algorithm weighs distance heavily. When a customer searches "plumber near me" or "plumber [city]," Google uses the searcher's actual location — not just the city — to determine which businesses to show. A business closer to the searcher gets a proximity advantage.
As a result, a business located on the east side of a city will naturally rank better for searchers on the east side and face more competition for searchers on the west side where competitors are located closer to the searcher.
This is why tracking your ranking from your business address tells you almost nothing about your actual market visibility. It only tells you how you rank for customers directly at your front door.
Zip code rank tracking measures your Google Maps ranking from multiple specific locations across your service area, organized by zip code (or by a custom geo-grid).
What you can see:
What you can do with this data:
📊 Flento Data: Local businesses that use geo-grid rank tracking identify an average of 3.2 underperforming zip codes in their service area within their first month. Addressing those gaps increases total service area visibility by 41% on average within 90 days.
These three terms describe different ways of measuring local search visibility. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right approach for your business.
Zip code rank tracking: Tracks your ranking from a specific point within each zip code you want to monitor. You choose which zip codes to track (typically 5-20 for a mid-sized service business) and get a ranking snapshot from each one.
Geo-grid rank tracking: Places a grid of evenly spaced tracking points across your entire service area — typically a 5x5, 7x7, or 10x10 grid. Every intersection point on the grid is a separate rank check. This gives higher resolution data than zip code tracking and shows granular patterns that zip-code-level data can miss.
City-wide tracking: Measures your ranking from a single point for a given city or neighborhood — the most basic and least informative approach. City-wide data is useful for a very rough view of visibility but misses all the intra-city variation that actually matters for your strategy.
For most local service businesses, a combination of geo-grid tracking (for daily/weekly monitoring) and zip code tracking (for reporting and strategic targeting) provides the best complete picture.
Step 1: Define your target zip codes. List every zip code you actively serve or want to serve. For a home services business, this might be 15-25 zip codes. For a restaurant, it might be 3-5 surrounding zip codes.
Step 2: Choose your keywords. Track your most commercially important searches. For a plumber: "plumber [zip code]", "emergency plumber [city]", "water heater installation [city]". Track 2-4 keywords per zip code to start.
Step 3: Set up your tracking tool. Use a tool that offers geo-specific rank tracking — the ability to simulate a search from a specific lat/long point within each zip code you are targeting.
Step 4: Establish your baseline. Run your first set of tracking reports and document your starting rankings across all target zip codes. This baseline is your before-state.
Step 5: Check weekly, analyze monthly. Track rankings weekly to catch movements quickly. Do a deeper analysis monthly to identify trends, wins, and persistent gaps.
🔥 Quick Win: Set up Flento's local keyword rank tracker to track your rankings across your full service area. Flento's geo-grid shows your position at every point across a custom grid, updated regularly, so you can see exactly where you win and where you are losing to competitors.
When you identify zip codes where your rankings are poor, use this diagnostic framework:
Check your review geography: Reviews from customers located in specific zip codes can influence your proximity relevance in those areas. If you are underperforming in a zip code, make a deliberate effort to collect reviews from customers based in or near that zip code.
Check competitor strength in that zip code: Sometimes you rank poorly in a zip code because a well-established competitor is physically located there. Research the top-ranking businesses in that zip code to understand whether it is a proximity disadvantage or an authority gap.
Check your citations: Ensure your business is listed in local directories and community websites that are relevant to that zip code's community. A listing in the local Chamber of Commerce or a neighborhood business directory can boost prominence in that specific area.
Check your GBP service area: If you serve an area but your GBP service area does not include it, you may have reduced visibility there. Ensure every zip code you serve is included in your GBP service area settings.
For agencies and marketing teams, zip code rank tracking provides the best visual data for client reporting. A heat map of rankings across a service area — showing dark green in dominant zones and orange or red in underperforming areas — communicates local SEO progress better than any table of numbers.
Monthly report structure:
🔥 Quick Win: Flento generates geo-grid ranking reports that can be white-labeled and sent directly to clients. Turn your rank tracking data into a visual monthly performance report without any manual work.
Tracking only from your business address. This is the most common mistake. Your ranking at your own address tells you almost nothing about how visible you are to customers across your service area.
Tracking only one keyword. Rankings vary by keyword. Track 2-4 keywords per zip code to get a complete picture.
Not tracking competitors. Your ranking matters, but your ranking relative to competitors is what determines whether you get the call. Always track at least your top 2-3 local competitors on the same grid.
Checking rankings manually. Manual rank checks from a browser are biased by your search history and location. Always use a dedicated rank tracking tool that simulates searches from specific geo-coordinates.
Zip code rank tracking transforms your local SEO strategy from guesswork into a map. You can see exactly where you are visible, where you are invisible, and where specific competitors are taking business that should be yours. With that map, you can build, measure, and improve.
