Corporate lunches, weddings, and private events all start with a Google search.

A single wedding catering contract can be worth $10,000 to $50,000. A corporate lunch account can bring recurring revenue for years. And more of those contracts than you'd think start the same way: someone types "catering near me" or "wedding caterer [city]" into Google and calls one of the first three results.
If you've been running on word-of-mouth and referrals, you already know the catch. It works beautifully until a slow season arrives and the phone goes quiet. Local SEO gives caterers something referrals can't: a predictable pipeline of high-intent leads who are actively searching for exactly what you offer, right now.
The good news is that most catering companies barely do this, which means the bar to outrank them is lower than you'd expect. Here's the full system to rank on Google Maps, win events, and compete with bigger operations on a fraction of their marketing budget.
Businesses in adjacent categories face many of the same ranking challenges, which we cover in local SEO for golf courses.
If your business sits next to this niche, local SEO for cheese shops & delicatessens shows how the same ideas play out there.
For caterers, local SEO turns high-intent searches into booked events, because the person searching "corporate catering [city]" isn't browsing, they have a date, a headcount, and a budget. Ranking in the Google Maps 3-Pack for those searches puts you in front of buyers at the exact moment they're choosing.
This matters more in catering than in most industries because the contracts are large and the decision is fast. An event planner in Nashville, TN sourcing a caterer for a 200-person corporate event will shortlist from the top few Maps results, check photos and reviews, and send inquiries the same afternoon. If you're not visible, you're not in the running.
The businesses winning here aren't the biggest. They're the ones with a complete profile, current photos, and steady reviews, doing the basics consistently while competitors coast on referrals.
🛠️ Action Step: Search "caterer near me" and "wedding catering [your city]" on your phone today. If you're not in the top three, that's the gap between you and the events going to competitors.

Your Google Business Profile is the foundation of catering visibility, so set the category and services to match how people actually search. This is what feeds the map pack and decides which searches you show up for.
Get these dialed in:
This is the same foundation covered in the Google Business Profile optimization checklist, applied to how event buyers search. Get the categories and services right and you'll start surfacing for specific event types, not just generic "catering."
⚠️ Common Mistake: Leaving the service area blank or listing only a commercial-kitchen address. Buyers search by where their event is, not where your kitchen sits. An unset service area quietly filters you out of nearby searches.
For caterers, photos aren't decoration, they're the deciding factor, because buyers choose with their eyes before they read a word. A profile with sharp, current photos of real events and plated food will out-book a competitor with better pricing and stale stock images.
Upload real photos of your work: styled buffet spreads, plated courses, dessert tables, staff serving at actual events, branded setups. Refresh them regularly so the profile reads as active. A caterer in Charlotte, NC replaced generic food stock photos with images from three recent weddings and saw profile views and inquiries climb without changing anything else.
Cover the range of what you offer. A couple planning a wedding and an office manager booking a lunch are picturing very different events. Show both so each buyer sees themselves in your work.
🔥 Quick Win: After every event, spend five minutes shooting a few clean photos of the spread before service starts. That five-minute habit builds a steady stream of authentic, current images that keep your profile fresh and ranking.
The keywords that win catering leads are event-type and location terms with clear intent, not broad "catering" searches. Buyers search specifically, so match their language across your profile and site.
Build around terms like:
Weave these into your GBP services, page titles, and content. A caterer targeting "corporate catering Raleigh" and "wedding catering Raleigh" as distinct terms will rank for both instead of blending into one weak "catering" signal.
💡 Pro Tip: List every cuisine and event style as its own service item in your GBP. Each specific term you add is another search you can appear for, and specific searches convert far better than generic ones.
Create a dedicated landing page for each event type you cater, because a page focused on "wedding catering in [city]" ranks and converts better than one page trying to cover everything. Each page gives Google a clear relevance signal and gives buyers exactly what they searched for.
Build separate pages for weddings, corporate events, private parties, and any signature service, each with its own menus, photos, pricing guidance, and a clear inquiry form. A caterer in Tampa, FL that split its single "services" page into four event-specific pages started ranking for each event type and cut its inquiry-to-booking time because buyers landed on exactly the right page.
Keep each page genuinely specific. Real menus, real event photos, real detail about how you handle that event type, not the same text with the event name swapped in.
🛠️ Action Step: List every event type that drives real revenue for you. Each one that matters deserves its own page with unique menus, photos, and an inquiry form.
Reviews are a top local ranking signal and the trust factor buyers scrutinize most, so build a system to collect them from every event. In catering, the reviews that convert best mention the occasion, the headcount, and the outcome, not just "great food."
The challenge is timing. Your client is thrilled the day of the event and buried in follow-ups the week after. So ask while the glow is fresh: a same-week text or email with a direct review link, ideally referencing their specific event. This is the review velocity approach, and it compounds fast when every event feeds it.
Respond to every review. When a planner writes "handled our 250-person gala flawlessly," a thoughtful reply that thanks them and notes the event type reinforces your keywords and reassures the next buyer reading it.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Only asking happy wedding clients and forgetting corporate accounts. Recurring corporate reviews signal reliability, which is exactly what the next office manager is looking for.
Local citations and venue relationships build the authority that lifts catering rankings, because consistent business information and preferred-vendor listings both signal legitimacy to Google. This is where caterers have an advantage most local businesses don't: venues.
Get listed as a preferred or recommended vendor on the websites of event venues, wedding halls, and corporate spaces you work with. These are high-quality, locally relevant mentions that generic directories can't match. At the same time, keep your name, address, phone, and service area identical across every directory, because NAP consistency is a foundational ranking signal that inconsistency quietly erodes.
A caterer in Columbus, OH that got added as a preferred vendor at four local venues gained both direct referrals and the kind of local authority signals that helped its Maps ranking climb.
💡 Pro Tip: Every venue you've ever worked an event at is a potential preferred-vendor listing. Reach out to your five favorites this month and ask to be added to their vendor page.
The Flento Event Calendar Method is a simple weekly loop that keeps a caterer's local presence active: shoot, post, ask, respond. Run it after every event and your profile stays fresh, your reviews stay recent, and your rankings stay stable.
Here's the loop:
A caterer running this loop consistently beats a bigger competitor doing it sporadically, because Google rewards steady activity and buyers trust a profile that clearly runs real events every week. Don't overcomplicate it. Four habits, repeated.
📊 Flento Data: Local businesses posting to their Google Business Profile at least weekly appear in the Local Pack far more often than those posting monthly or less. For caterers, your weekly post is a recent event, which doubles as a portfolio.
Flento automates the parts of the Event Calendar Method that caterers never have time for. Google Review Management Software sends the same-week review request after each event and routes responses so no review sits ignored. Business Listing Management Software keeps your name, address, and service area identical across 50+ directories, protecting the local SEO foundation that inconsistency erodes.
That Charlotte caterer used Flento's Google Business Profile Optimizer to fix categories and services, then automated review requests, and moved into the 3-Pack for both wedding and corporate searches within a season.
If you also run a storefront or shared kitchen, the fundamentals overlap with restaurant local SEO, worth a look for the on-site and menu side.

How do catering companies rank on Google Maps? Optimize your Google Business Profile with "Caterer" as the primary category, a defined service area, and every event type listed as a service. Then add current event photos, collect recent reviews, and keep your business information consistent across directories. The map pack, not organic listings, drives most catering inquiries.
What keywords should caterers target for SEO? Target event-type and location terms with clear intent: "wedding caterer [city]," "corporate catering [city]," "buffet catering," and cuisine-specific terms like "BBQ catering [city]." Specific searches convert far better than broad "catering near me," so list each event type and cuisine as its own service.
How important are photos for catering SEO? Very. Buyers choose caterers visually, so a profile with sharp, current photos of real events and plated food out-books competitors with stale stock images. Shoot a few clean photos before service at every event and refresh your profile regularly.
How do caterers get more Google reviews? Ask every client within a week of their event, while the experience is fresh, using a direct review link that references their specific occasion. Collect reviews from corporate accounts too, not just weddings, since recurring reviews signal the reliability new buyers look for.
Should a caterer build separate pages for each event type? Yes. A page focused on "wedding catering in [city]" ranks and converts better than one page covering everything. Build dedicated pages for weddings, corporate events, and private parties, each with its own menus, photos, and inquiry form.
How can a small caterer compete with larger catering companies? Consistency. A complete profile, current event photos, steady reviews, and weekly posts beat a bigger competitor coasting on referrals. Google rewards active local presence, and buyers trust a profile that clearly runs real events every week, regardless of company size.
