When a traveler searches "hotels in Savannah" or "where to stay in Sedona" on Google, they typically see a dedicated hotel search experience at the top of the results — a map, a list of properties, and pricing from multiple booking sources. This is the Google Hotels experience, and it is powered by a combination of Google Hotel Ads (a paid channel) and Google Business Profile optimization (an organic channel).
For hotels, bed and breakfasts, boutique inns, and vacation rental property managers, understanding how Google Hotel Ads work alongside local SEO is essential. This guide covers both the paid and organic dimensions of Google accommodation search and how to maximize visibility in both.

Google Hotel Ads are a form of metasearch advertising. Hotels and vacation rentals do not advertise directly in the traditional sense. Instead, they connect their live room rate and availability data to Google through an integration — either directly or through a hotel technology partner — and Google displays their rates alongside those from OTAs (Online Travel Agents) like Booking.com and Expedia.
When a traveler clicks a rate on Google Hotels, they are either taken directly to the hotel's own booking engine (if the hotel is advertising its direct rate) or to an OTA listing. The hotel only pays when a traveler clicks through — this is a cost-per-click model similar to Google Search Ads.
The Google Hotel Ads ecosystem:
For smaller properties (B&Bs, boutique hotels, vacation rentals): Google Hotel Ads are accessible through Google's free booking link program, which allows eligible properties to show their direct rate at no cost in some formats. This is a significant opportunity for independent properties competing against OTA listings.

Alongside the paid Google Hotel Ads experience, Google also displays hotel and accommodation results based on organic local search signals — the same signals that drive Google Maps rankings for any local business.
Your Google Business Profile for your hotel or vacation rental is the foundation of your organic accommodation search presence. Properties with:

Primary category: Use "Hotel" for hotels. "Bed & Breakfast" for B&Bs. "Vacation home rental" or "Cabin" for vacation rentals. "Inn" for inns.
Business description: Describe the property's unique character, location advantages, and amenity highlights. A boutique hotel in Savannah should describe its historic location, specific neighborhoods' proximity, and the experience it offers — not just "we are a hotel with rooms."
Amenities as attributes: Add every available attribute. Pool, gym, free breakfast, pet-friendly, EV charging, parking, spa, restaurant on-site, airport shuttle — every attribute is a searchable differentiator that can surface your property in filtered accommodation searches.
Photos are critical: Accommodation searches are highly visual. Properties with 50+ high-quality photos consistently outperform those with fewer in both click-through rates and booking conversions. Include: exterior, lobby, room types (every category), pool, restaurant, spa, views, and seasonal/mood photography.
Pricing display: If your GBP supports displaying room pricing, ensure this data is connected and accurate. Properties with visible pricing in Google's accommodation results see higher click-through rates from comparison shoppers.
Accommodation searches are more review-sensitive than almost any other local category. Travelers spending $150 to $500+ per night research reviews extensively before booking. The properties that convert best from Google accommodation search are those with the highest review count and strongest ratings.
Target review platforms:
When to ask for reviews: Send review requests at checkout or within 24 hours of a guest's departure. This is the moment of peak satisfaction — the experience is fresh and the accommodation was just enjoyed.
📊 Flento Data: Hotels with 150+ Google reviews rank in Google's accommodation local results for destination searches (e.g., "hotels in [city]") 2.4x more frequently than those with fewer than 40 reviews.
🔥 Quick Win: Use Flento to automate checkout review requests to every departing guest. A consistent, automated post-stay review request program is the fastest way to build the review volume needed to compete in Google accommodation search.
If you want to appear in the Google Hotel Ads results with your direct rate — competing directly against OTA rates for the same rooms — you need to connect your property management system or booking engine to Google.
How to connect:
Free Booking Links: Google offers a free booking link program that allows eligible properties to show their direct rate in the "Book now" section of Google Hotels without a cost-per-click fee. This is particularly valuable for independent properties and vacation rentals. Connect through an eligible connectivity partner to participate.
Monitor monthly:
Google's Hotel Insights: If your property participates in Google Hotel Ads, you have access to Hotel Insights data showing your ranking position and rate competitiveness vs. OTA listings for your property.
Beyond GBP optimization, properties that invest in destination content on their own website consistently build stronger organic local search authority over time.
Content ideas:
Destination content builds inbound links from travel bloggers and local tourism sites, which strengthens your domain authority and supports your hotel search rankings.
Google Hotel Ads and local SEO work together to determine your visibility in the accommodation search results that millions of travelers use every day. A fully optimized GBP, strong review profile, and direct booking connection give independent hotels and vacation rentals the tools to compete effectively against both larger chain properties and OTA listings.
