If your Google Business Profile has been optimized for six months and you're only tracking rankings, you're flying with one instrument. A business can sit at position 2 for its main keyword and still lose to the position-4 competitor with a higher click-through rate, more recent reviews, and a profile that actually converts. Rankings tell you where you appear. They don't tell you whether appearing is doing anything for the business.
Local SEO KPIs close that gap. The right set of metrics shows the full funnel, from how often you show up, to how many people act, to whether the foundation underneath it all is sound. Track them and you can tell within weeks whether your work is paying off, and exactly where it's leaking.
Here are the exact KPIs to monitor, grouped so you always know what each one is telling you. If local SEO itself is new, start there first.
If this comes up for you, we cover it in more detail in our piece on local SEO A/B testing.
The fastest way to make sense of local SEO metrics is what we call the Flento Local SEO Scorecard, four tiers that map to the funnel so no single number misleads you. Most businesses track one tier and miss the other three.
Read top to bottom. A weak foundation caps everything above it, and high visibility with low engagement points straight at a conversion problem. The sections below cover each KPI in its tier.
💡 Pro Tip: When a metric looks wrong, move down a tier to find the cause. Low actions? Check reputation. Stalled visibility despite good work? Check the foundation. The Scorecard is a diagnostic path, not just a list.
Visibility metrics measure how often and how prominently you appear in local search, and they're the top of your funnel. If these are weak, nothing downstream gets a chance to work.
Google Maps 3-Pack position measures whether you're in the top 3 for your target keywords. The 3-Pack captures the majority of local clicks, and position 1 dramatically outperforms position 3. Track it with a local keyword rank tracker that simulates searches from real geographic points, not national averages. Target: position 1–3 for your primary service-plus-city term.
Share of Local Voice (SoLV) measures what percentage of possible local appearances across your service area you actually capture. A business ranking #1 from its own address but #8 at the edges of its area has poor SoLV. Grid-based trackers like Flento's local keyword rank tracker calculate it automatically. Target: 40%+ is competitive, 60%+ is dominant.
GBP profile views measure how often your profile appeared in Search and Maps. It's the top of the funnel, rising views mean you're surfacing more often. Track it in the GBP Performance dashboard. Target: month-over-month growth after optimization.
Local organic rankings measure your website's position in non-map results. The map pack and organic results run on separate algorithms, so track both. Use Google Search Console for aggregate data and a rank tracker for specific keywords.
🛠️ Action Step: Run a geo-grid scan today. If your SoLV drops off sharply away from your address, expanding visibility to your service-area edges is your highest-priority visibility fix.
Engagement metrics measure what people do after they find you, and they reveal whether your visibility is actually producing business. High views with low actions is the single most common, and most fixable, local SEO problem.
Profile actions are calls, direction requests, and website clicks from your profile, the conversion of your GBP. Track each in the GBP Performance dashboard. Low actions on high views means your profile is appearing but not compelling.
Click-to-action rate is the percentage of profile views that become an action. It tells you whether your profile content, photos, reviews, description, is doing its job.
📊 Flento Data: The median GBP click-to-action rate for service businesses is 8–12%. Below 5% usually means your photos, reviews, or description need work, not that you need more visibility.
A plumber in San Antonio, TX had strong rankings but a 4% action rate. The fix wasn't more traffic, it was a brighter cover photo and 30 fresh reviews, after which the same visibility produced nearly double the calls.
🛠️ Action Step: Calculate your click-to-action rate (actions ÷ views) this month. Under 5%? Your next work is profile conversion, not ranking.
Reputation metrics measure the trust signals that drive both ranking and conversion, and they're often what separates two businesses with identical rankings. Reviews are the part of local SEO customers read most closely.
Review volume and velocity track your total count and new reviews per month. Velocity is a direct ranking and trust signal, a stagnant profile weakens both. Target: 4–6 new reviews per month for a small business, 10–20+ for higher-volume operations.
Average star rating is your displayed rating. Below 4.0 sharply cuts click-through; 4.5+ with real volume maximizes conversion. Track the trend, a slipping average is an early warning. Target: 4.3+ heading toward 4.6+.
Review response rate is the share of reviews you reply to. Businesses that respond to reviews consistently outrank those that don't, because Google reads active management as a trust signal. Target: 90%+, within 48 hours.
💡 Pro Tip: Velocity beats volume. A profile with 60 reviews and 8 in the last month outperforms one with 300 reviews and nothing recent, because recency signals an active, currently-trusted business.
Your citation consistency is the foundation metric, and it needs to be solid before anything above it delivers full impact. Inconsistent business information quietly caps every other optimization.
Citation consistency score measures how consistently your name, address, and phone (NAP) appear across major directories. Inconsistent NAP makes Google hedge on your legitimacy, weakening your ranking signal no matter what else you do. Run a citation audit against the top directories and data aggregators, and aim for 90%+ NAP consistency across your top 50 sources.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Pouring effort into reviews and content while NAP inconsistencies sit unfixed. The foundation caps the ceiling, fix citations first, then build on top.
Track each metric on a cadence that matches how fast it moves, so you catch problems early without drowning in noise. Checking everything daily wastes time; checking quarterly misses drops.
| Metric | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Google Maps 3-Pack position | Weekly |
| Share of Local Voice | Monthly |
| GBP profile views and actions | Monthly |
| Review volume and velocity | Weekly |
| Average star rating | Monthly |
| Review response rate | Weekly |
| Citation consistency | Quarterly |
| Local organic rankings | Weekly |
🛠️ Action Step: Put these on a recurring calendar block now. Consistent measurement, not occasional deep-dives, is what separates businesses that improve from those that plateau.
Flento puts the entire Scorecard in one dashboard instead of five tools and a spreadsheet. The local keyword rank tracker measures 3-Pack position and Share of Local Voice across a geo-grid, so you see visibility across your whole service area, not one point. The Google review management software tracks review volume, velocity, rating, and response rate and automates the requests that keep them healthy. And the business listing management software scores your NAP consistency across 50+ directories so the foundation tier stays solid.
That San Antonio plumber who doubled calls without new traffic? Flento's dashboard surfaced the low click-to-action rate that pure rank tracking had hidden. For the deeper how-to, see how to track local SEO rankings.

What are the most important local SEO KPIs to track? The essentials span four tiers: visibility (3-Pack position, Share of Local Voice, profile views), engagement (calls, directions, website clicks, click-to-action rate), reputation (review volume, velocity, rating, response rate), and foundation (NAP consistency). Tracking only rankings misses whether that visibility actually converts into business.
How do I measure local SEO performance beyond rankings? Look at the full funnel. Profile views tell you about visibility, profile actions and click-to-action rate tell you about conversion, and reviews tell you about trust. A high ranking with low actions signals a profile-conversion problem that rankings alone would never reveal.
What is Share of Local Voice in local SEO? Share of Local Voice (SoLV) is the percentage of possible local search appearances across your service area that you actually capture, measured by averaging your position across a geo-grid. It reveals visibility you'd miss with a single-point rank check, 40%+ is competitive and 60%+ is dominant in most markets.
How often should I check my local SEO metrics? Match the cadence to how fast each moves: 3-Pack position, review velocity, and organic rankings weekly; profile views, actions, and star rating monthly; citation consistency quarterly. Consistent measurement on a schedule beats occasional deep-dives for catching problems early.
What's a good GBP click-to-action rate? For service businesses, the median is 8–12% of profile views turning into a call, direction request, or website click. Below 5% usually points to weak profile elements, photos, reviews, or description, rather than a visibility problem. Improving conversion there often beats chasing more traffic.
Why does NAP consistency matter as a KPI? Inconsistent name, address, and phone data across directories makes Google less certain your business is legitimate, which weakens your ranking signal regardless of your other efforts. It's a foundation metric, get it above 90% before expecting your reviews and content work to deliver full impact.
Rankings are one instrument on the dashboard, not the whole panel.
