Customers who use the Open Now filter on Google Maps are ready to act immediately.
When a customer filters Google Maps results by "Open Now," they are telling Google something critical: they want service right now, not tomorrow. They are not researching. They are not comparing. They are ready to walk in, call, or order. Businesses that show up in "Open Now" results get the most purchase-ready customers in all of local search.
But showing up in "Open Now" results requires more than just being open. Your Google Business Profile hours must be accurate, current, and comprehensive. And there are specific optimizations that increase your visibility specifically for real-time, high-intent searches. This guide covers all of them.
For more on this, see our guide to GBP holiday hours, which covers how to set special and holiday hours on your profile.
If this comes up for you, we cover it in more detail in our piece on local SEO for businesses that only operate weekends.
The "Open Now" filter on Google Maps is used by customers at the moment of action. These searches peak in the early evening, on weekends, and during and immediately after holidays. They also spike after local events, during weather emergencies, and whenever someone is in an unfamiliar area looking for immediate help.
The intent behind an "Open Now" search is nearly always immediate: the person is going somewhere right now, they are about to call, or they are placing an order. This is why getting your hours right is one of the highest-ROI optimizations available on Google Business Profile.
📊 Flento Data: Businesses that appear in "Open Now" filtered results convert at 3.4x the rate of the same business appearing in standard search results where the customer is still in research mode.
Complete all 7 days. Every day of the week must have hours entered — including days you are closed. Mark closed days explicitly as "Closed" rather than leaving them blank. Blank hours signal incompleteness to Google and can result in your business being excluded from "Open Now" results.
Update for every schedule change. If you change your hours seasonally, after hiring new staff, or for any other reason, update your GBP hours the day before the change takes effect. Do not let your GBP hours fall out of sync with your actual hours.
Add secondary hours for different services. Google's "More hours" feature lets you add separate hours for specific services — a drive-through, a bar, a kitchen, a delivery service, or a phone support line. If different parts of your business operate on different schedules, use "More hours" to communicate that. Customers searching for a specific service during a specific time slot benefit enormously from this detail.
Phone and delivery hours are separate opportunities. A restaurant that closes its dining room at 9 PM but continues accepting delivery orders until 11 PM can add separate delivery hours. This captures "Open Now" delivery searches for 2 extra hours each night.
Nothing damages "Open Now" visibility and customer trust faster than a business showing as "Open" on Google Maps when the doors are actually locked on a holiday.
Google notifies you before major holidays through your GBP dashboard and by email. When you see these prompts, act on them immediately.
Best practice: Set your holiday hours for the entire year at the start of each year. Most US public holidays recur annually — set hours for New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve all at once. Add Black Friday if your hours differ from standard.
Mark yourself as "Temporarily Closed" for vacations, renovations, or unexpected closures. This is much better than leaving incorrect hours that show you as open when you are not.
Beyond hours, several GBP attributes influence your relevance for "Open Now" searches:
"Accepts walk-ins" attribute signals that you are immediately accessible without an appointment. For businesses where this is true, enabling this attribute increases your match rate for immediate-access searches.
"No appointment needed" (in applicable categories) communicates that there is no barrier to immediate service.
"Open 24 hours" for genuinely 24/7 businesses — if this is true, setting each day to "Open 24 hours" rather than manually entering midnight-to-midnight hours gives Google the clearest signal.
Response time to messages: Businesses that respond to Google Messages quickly are rewarded in Google's engagement signals. If you are open and someone sends a message, responding within minutes demonstrates real-time availability that influences how Google treats your listing during active hours.
GBP Posts published during your business hours — particularly "Update" posts that reference current activity ("We are open today until 9 PM," "Fresh inventory just arrived," "Booking same-day appointments") — signal to Google that your business is actively operating right now.
Posts published during business hours from your GBP account create a real-time freshness signal. Businesses that post at least weekly, and that post during active hours, are rewarded with higher "Open Now" visibility compared to businesses that are technically open but never signal activity to Google.
💡 Pro Tip: Schedule a brief weekly GBP post during your busiest business hours. A sentence about your current availability, a photo of today's work, or a reminder of your hours serves double duty: it signals activity to Google and gives customers checking your profile in real time a reason to contact you.
Reviews that mention your hours — "They were the only place open on Sunday," "Stayed open late to help me with my emergency" — serve as social proof of your real-time availability and create keyword-rich review content that can influence visibility for "Open Now" related searches.
When asking for reviews, you do not need to specifically prompt customers to mention hours. Customers who experienced your availability during off-hours or emergencies will often mention it naturally. Encourage reviews from those customers specifically.
🔥 Quick Win: Use Flento to monitor your review velocity and track which review themes are most common. Businesses that see "hours" and "availability" frequently mentioned in reviews tend to rank better for "Open Now" searches.
At least once a month, open an incognito browser tab and search for your business category + your city on Google Maps. Then apply the "Open Now" filter during your stated business hours. Confirm that your listing appears in the filtered results.
If your listing does not appear in "Open Now" results when you are genuinely open, check:
Any discrepancy between your stated hours and your listing appearance should be investigated and corrected immediately.
Blank hours for any day. Even for closed days, enter "Closed" explicitly rather than leaving the field empty.
No holiday hours. Your GBP shows as "Open" on Christmas Day when you are closed. A customer arrives and finds locked doors. They leave a 1-star review. This is the single most common, most preventable hours mistake.
Hours that changed but were never updated. A business that changed its closing time from 8 PM to 6 PM three months ago and never updated its GBP is showing up in "Open Now" results for customers arriving at 7 PM to a locked door.
The "Open Now" customer has already decided they want your service and need it now. Make sure your GBP shows up with accurate hours, active signals, and availability attributes that tell Google — and your customers — that you are open, ready, and the right choice.
