A profile with no reviews for four months almost never has a satisfaction problem. Here is how to date the month it stopped, find the process that broke, and restart without producing a burst that looks manufactured.

There is a particular kind of quiet that worries local business owners: the profile that has not received a review in four months. The business is trading normally, customers seem happy, nothing has changed. The reviews simply stopped, and nobody can say when or why.
This is almost never a satisfaction problem and almost always a process problem, but the two look identical from the outside and the fix depends entirely on which one you have.
This guide covers diagnosing a review flow that has dried up: how to find the actual cause, what to check in order, and how to restart without triggering suspicion.
A related situation is covered in our piece on review management for subscription businesses.
Find the exact date reviews slowed, because the cause is almost always something that changed in that same week.
Owners usually notice months late and guess wrongly about timing.
How to date it:
The cause is usually mundane. A staff member left, a booking system changed, an email template was rewritten, a QR code sign came down during a refit. The correlation is almost always visible once you have the date.
🛠️ Action Step: Chart your reviews by month before doing anything else. The month it stopped tells you what to investigate, and guessing without it wastes weeks.
Verify that requests are actually going out, because the most common cause is that the asking process quietly broke and nobody noticed.
What to check:
Broken automations fail silently. A disconnected integration produces no error anyone sees, just an absence, which is exactly what you are looking at.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Assuming customers stopped wanting to review you. In the large majority of cases they were never asked, because something in the asking chain broke without an alert.
Confirm reviews are not being left and removed, because a filtering problem looks identical to a collection problem from the dashboard.
Signs of filtering rather than absence:
Ask three recent customers directly whether they left one. If they did and it is not visible, you have a suppression problem, which is a different repair entirely.
Consider whether something in the customer journey removed the moment when reviews were naturally prompted.
Sometimes the process did not break, it moved.
Common experience changes:
Removing a human moment removes the ask. Any change that reduces face-to-face contact tends to cut reviews sharply, and it needs a deliberate replacement rather than a hope.
Resume gradually and from real recent customers, because a sudden burst after months of silence reads as artificial to both readers and platform systems.
How to restart safely:
Old customers are the trap. Twenty reviews in a fortnight describing service from a year ago is the pattern that attracts scrutiny and the one owners reach for first.
The rules on what is permitted are in FTC fake review rules, and pacing is covered in Google review velocity.
Put the request into a system that alerts you when it stops, because the underlying failure was that nothing told you anything had changed.
What a durable process needs:
📊 Flento Data: Across local profiles, businesses with a monitored request process show far more consistent month-to-month review rates than those relying on staff to remember.
🔥 Quick Win: Set a calendar reminder on the first of every month to check last month's review count. Most dry spells run for a quarter before anyone notices, and a two minute check catches them in weeks.
A repeatable process is in how to build a review management system.
Flento makes the absence visible, which is the part that failed the first time.
Google Review Management Software sends requests on a defined trigger and reports what went out, so a broken chain surfaces immediately.
Google Business Profile Optimizer monitors the profile for removals and changes that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Q: Why did my reviews suddenly stop? A: Usually because the asking process broke rather than because satisfaction fell. Staff departures, changed booking systems, broken integrations and removed signage are the most common causes.
Q: How do I find the cause? A: Chart reviews by month, identify the month the rate dropped, and list what changed in the business that same month. The correlation is almost always obvious once you have the date.
Q: How can I tell if reviews are being filtered rather than not left? A: Ask three recent customers directly. If they left reviews you cannot see, you have a suppression problem. If nobody left one, you have a collection problem.
Q: Is it safe to email old customers to restart? A: No. A burst of reviews describing service from a year ago is the pattern most likely to attract scrutiny. Start with recent customers and spread requests over weeks.
Q: Should I offer an incentive to get reviews flowing again? A: No. Incentivised reviews create a compliance problem considerably worse than a quiet profile, and platforms and regulators both treat it seriously.
Q: How do I stop it happening again? A: Tie the request to an automated trigger that reports what it sent, and check your review count monthly. The original failure was that nothing alerted you.
Reviews stop because the asking stopped, and the asking stopped because it depended on a person, a sign or an integration that quietly went away. Find the month, find the change, and you have found the cause.
Fix the trigger rather than the symptom, then restart slowly with people you served last week.
And put a two minute check in your calendar for the first of every month, because the real failure was that nobody noticed for a quarter. Try Flento free.
