A review naming a rival is a customer's opinion; your reply is your business's statement. Here is what to write, what platforms will remove, and why flattering comparisons need the same caution.

"Much better than the place down the road" reads like a gift until you think about it. A review naming a competitor is public, permanent, and now involves a business that did not ask to be discussed on your listing. Occasionally it involves claims that are simply untrue.
The reverse happens too: a review on your profile praising someone else, or a complaint that is actually about a business you have been confused with.
This guide covers how to handle reviews mentioning competitors: what to respond, what platforms will remove, and why the flattering ones deserve as much caution as the critical ones.
If this topic is on your list, the walkthrough on responding to a safety incident review goes into more detail.
Respond without repeating, confirming or discussing the competitor's name, because engaging turns a customer's opinion into your published claim.
The reviewer can say what they like. You cannot adopt it.
A response that works:
"Thank you, we appreciate you taking the time. Glad we could help, and we look forward to seeing you again."
Do not write:
Repeating a disparaging claim can create liability that the original review does not, because you are the business publishing it in your own voice. Keep the response about your own service.
🛠️ Action Step: Check whether any of your existing responses name a competitor. If so, edit them.
Treat a positive comparison with the same restraint as a negative one, because a favourable review naming a rival is still a public claim about their business.
Owners relax on these and should not.
Why it matters:
The safe response acknowledges the compliment and ignores the comparison entirely. Readers understand the context without you underlining it.
Report reviews that describe a different business, because misdirected reviews are one of the genuinely removable categories.
This happens more than owners expect, particularly with similar names nearby.
How to handle it:
Cite facts you can disprove. "This review mentions a drive-through and valet parking; we have neither" succeeds far more often than a general objection.
The full process is in how to handle a review left for the wrong business.
Report a suspected competitor review as a conflict of interest rather than as a false claim, because that is the policy that applies and the one platforms act on.
Signs worth noting:
What not to do:
Report once, provide specifics, and respond publicly with restraint. A calm response to an unfair review persuades readers more effectively than any accusation.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Publicly stating that a review came from a competitor. Unless you can prove it, you have made an accusation on your own listing that readers will judge you for.
Respond politely to a review that praises someone else, then report it if it genuinely relates to a different business.
Occasionally someone leaves a positive review for a competitor on your profile by mistake.
How to handle it:
It is not worth much effort. A single misdirected positive review does little harm, and continued review collection resolves the impression far faster than a removal request.
Set a policy that one trained person responds to reviews, because competitor mentions are exactly where an unconsidered reply causes damage.
A workable policy:

Q: Should I respond to a review that names a competitor? A: Yes, but without repeating or discussing the competitor. Keep the response about your own service. Repeating a disparaging claim in your own voice creates exposure the original review does not.
Q: What about a review that praises us over a competitor? A: Treat it with the same restraint. It is still a public claim about another business, it may be inaccurate, and readers sometimes read gloating as a warning sign.
Q: Can I get a review removed if I think a competitor wrote it? A: Report it as a conflict of interest, which is the applicable policy. Never state publicly that you believe a competitor wrote it unless you can prove it.
Q: What if a review is actually about a different business? A: Report it as off-topic, citing specific factual mismatches such as services or facilities you do not have. That is one of the genuinely removable categories.
Q: Should I contact a competitor about a review mentioning them? A: No. There is nothing useful to gain and the interaction rarely improves things. Handle your own listing and leave theirs alone.
Q: How do I stop bad responses to provocative reviews? A: Assign responses to one trained person, prohibit competitor names in replies, and write the standard response in advance. These get answered badly because they get answered in the moment.
A review naming a competitor is a customer's opinion. Your response is your business's statement, and the two are treated very differently by readers and occasionally by lawyers.
