Only patients who booked and attended can leave a Zocdoc review, which makes them harder to earn and far more trusted. Here is how they work, what HIPAA allows in your responses, and why wait time decides bookings.

Zocdoc reviews are unusual in one important way: only patients who actually booked and attended an appointment through the platform can leave one. No walk-ins, no anonymous strangers, no competitor sabotage. That verification makes them harder to accumulate and considerably more trusted once you have them.
It also means most practices have far fewer Zocdoc reviews than Google reviews, and treat the platform as a booking tool rather than a reputation asset. That is a mistake, because the patient reading your Zocdoc profile is minutes from choosing a provider.
This guide covers how Zocdoc reviews work, how they differ from Google, what HIPAA does and does not allow in your responses, and how to convert a profile viewer into a booked appointment.

The same principles carry over to specific trades, and local SEO for gastroenterologists shows what they look like in one niche.
Zocdoc reviews come only from patients who booked through the platform and attended the appointment, which makes them verified but also caps how many you can accumulate.
The mechanics differ from open platforms in ways that shape strategy.
What to know:
The consequence: your Zocdoc review volume is a direct function of your Zocdoc booking volume. You cannot shortcut it by asking patients who found you elsewhere.
🛠️ Action Step: Check your average rating on each individual dimension rather than the headline number. Wait time is usually the weakest and it is the one patients weigh most heavily when choosing.
Wait time ratings drive Zocdoc conversion more than clinical ratings, because a patient choosing between two similarly rated providers uses it as the tiebreaker.
Nobody selects a doctor on the assumption they are clinically incompetent. They assume baseline competence and then differentiate on experience, and waiting is the part of the experience patients resent most.
What moves the wait time score:
💡 Pro Tip: If your wait time score is dragging your profile down, reducing your Zocdoc slot availability during your busiest clinic hours often improves the rating more than any front-desk change. Fewer, better-timed bookings beat more late ones.
You may respond to a Zocdoc or Google review without confirming the person is a patient, and you must not reference their visit, condition or treatment in any way.
This is the single most common compliance failure in healthcare marketing, and it happens because a warm, specific response feels like good service.
Safe response pattern:
"Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. We take all patient experience seriously and would welcome the chance to discuss it directly. Please contact our office manager at [number]."
Never write:
The safest responses are slightly generic, and that is fine. A prospective patient reads professionalism into restraint.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Correcting a factual inaccuracy in a negative review. Even a mild correction such as "you were actually seen within ten minutes" confirms attendance and references the visit. It is a disclosure.
Google reviews drive discovery and Local Pack ranking, while Zocdoc reviews drive conversion at the point of booking, so a practice needs both for different reasons.
Treating them as interchangeable leads practices to over-invest in one and neglect the other.
Google:
Zocdoc:
Priority for most practices: Google first, because without discovery nobody reaches either profile. Then Zocdoc, because that is where the booking decision happens. Broader context is in local SEO for healthcare providers.
A complete Zocdoc profile converts substantially better than a sparse one, because patients filter on insurance, availability and specific procedures before they read a single review.
Reviews get attention, but the filters run first. A patient searching for an in-network provider with availability this week will never see you if those fields are wrong.
What matters most:
Insurance accuracy is the biggest single lever. Out-of-date plan listings produce cancelled appointments and frustrated patients, which then shows up in your reviews.
📊 Flento Data: Across healthcare profiles, insurance and availability attributes drive more measurable contact than almost any other field, and they are among the most frequently outdated.
Respond to a negative healthcare review once, briefly, without details, and move the conversation to a private channel, because the audience is future patients rather than the reviewer.
Healthcare reviews are emotional. Complaints usually concern waiting, billing or feeling dismissed, and all three feel unfair to a clinician who remembers the visit differently.
A response that works:
"We're sorry to hear your experience didn't meet expectations. Patient feedback helps us improve. Please reach our practice manager on [number] so we can look into this properly."
Then stop. Do not reply again publicly, do not correct the record, and do not let a clinician respond in the heat of the moment.
Escalate internally instead. If several reviews mention the same problem, that is operational data rather than a reputation problem, and responding to it properly fixes the source. Templates and structure are in how to respond to negative reviews.
🔥 Quick Win: Set a rule that only one trained person responds to reviews, and that clinicians never respond directly. This single policy prevents most healthcare disclosure incidents.
Flento handles the Google side, which is where discovery happens, and keeps the profile attributes current that determine whether patients ever reach your Zocdoc listing.
Google Review Management Software builds Google volume without gating or incentives, and without touching patient information.
Google Business Profile Optimizer keeps insurance, accessibility and new-patient attributes accurate, which drives more healthcare calls than almost anything else you can change.
Local Keyword Rank Tracker shows your visibility radius, which matters because patients travel further for care than for most local services.

Q: Can a US practice ask patients for Zocdoc reviews? A: Not directly. Zocdoc automatically requests reviews from patients who booked and attended through the platform. Your review volume there is a function of your booking volume, which is why Google remains the platform you can actively build.
Q: Do Zocdoc reviews affect Google rankings? A: No. They do not feed Google's Local Pack. They affect conversion at the point where a patient is choosing a provider, which is a different and equally important job.
Q: Can a practice respond to reviews without violating HIPAA? A: Yes, provided the response never confirms the person is a patient and never references their visit, condition or treatment. Generic, professional responses that redirect to a private channel are the safe pattern.
Q: What should a practice do about a negative review containing false claims? A: Respond once, briefly and generically, and move the conversation offline. Correcting the record publicly confirms attendance and references the visit, which is a disclosure regardless of accuracy.
Q: Which matters more for a practice, Google or Zocdoc? A: Google for discovery and rankings, Zocdoc for conversion at the booking moment. Most practices should build Google first, since without discovery patients never reach either profile.
Q: Why is my Zocdoc rating lower than my Google rating? A: Usually the wait time dimension, which Zocdoc measures explicitly and Google does not. Patients who book online expect punctuality, and Zocdoc gives them a specific place to score it.
Zocdoc reviews are harder to earn and worth more once earned, because the reader knows every reviewer actually attended. That verification is the platform's whole value, and it is why a modest number of Zocdoc reviews carries real weight.
The two changes that move the needle for most practices are unglamorous: get the insurance list current, and stop taking bookings into slots that reliably run late.
Do both this month. Try Flento free to make sure patients are finding you in the first place.
