Dermatology practices compete for both medical and cosmetic patients who search very differently.

A dermatology practice has two completely different patients hiding inside one Google Business Profile. One is searching "dermatologist near me" because they have a suspicious mole and their insurance covers it. The other is searching "Botox near me" or "laser skin resurfacing [city]" and paying cash. They use different words, book for different reasons, and Google treats them as separate searches. Most dermatology practices optimize for one and quietly lose the other.
That split is the whole game in dermatology local SEO. A practice in Tampa, FL that ranks for medical searches but ignores cosmetic keywords is leaving the highest-margin patients to the medical spa down the street. Get both funnels ranking in the Map Pack and you capture the full value of every patient, including the teenager who comes in for acne this year and returns for cosmetic treatments for the next decade.
This guide covers how dermatology practices rank locally for both the medical and cosmetic searches that matter. If local SEO is new to you, our complete local SEO overview is the fastest way to get the fundamentals first.

For dermatology practices, the Google Map Pack is where most new patients decide between you and a competitor, and the decision happens in seconds. Patients rarely scroll past the first three local results, so if your practice isn't in that pack for "dermatologist near me" or your top cosmetic treatments, you're invisible to the people ready to book right now.
The financial stakes are higher in dermatology than in almost any local vertical because of patient lifetime value. A patient acquired for a $150 medical visit can return for thousands of dollars in cosmetic treatments over the following years. Winning the local search isn't a single booking, it's the start of a multi-year relationship.
Dermatology is also intensely visual, which changes how the profile itself converts. A practice in Scottsdale, AZ that shows real before-and-after results and current office photos on its profile will out-convert a competitor ranked right beside it that shows nothing. Ranking gets you seen. The visual proof gets you booked.
🛠️ Action Step: In an incognito window, search both a medical term ("skin cancer screening [city]") and a cosmetic term ("Botox [city]"). Note your Map Pack position for each. If you rank for one and not the other, that gap is your biggest opportunity.
We apply a similar framework in our guide to local SEO for plastic surgeons.
Your primary Google Business Profile category determines which searches you can appear in, and dermatology practices have a real strategic choice to make here. "Dermatologist" is the natural primary, but it can under-serve a practice whose revenue leans cosmetic. Google uses the primary category to decide Map Pack eligibility, so the choice directly shapes which patients find you.
Run "Dermatologist" as your primary in almost every case, then stack secondary categories that unlock the cosmetic funnel: "Skin care clinic," "Medical spa," "Laser hair removal service," and "Facial spa" where they apply. A practice in Charlotte, NC that added "Medical spa" and "Skin care clinic" as secondaries started appearing for cosmetic searches it had never ranked for, without losing any medical visibility.
The mistake is choosing a cosmetic-only primary like "Medical spa" and dropping "Dermatologist." That can quietly cut you out of the high-volume medical searches that feed your long-term cosmetic pipeline.
💡 Pro Tip: Check what category your best-ranking local competitor uses before changing yours. If a nearby practice dominates cosmetic searches, look at whether they run a cosmetic secondary you're missing. Then complete every profile field, since Google rewards completeness. Our GBP optimization checklist covers the full setup.
Businesses in adjacent categories face many of the same ranking challenges, which we cover in local SEO for medical billing companies.
Dermatology practices that rank for specific treatments have a specific page for each one, not a single "Services" page trying to cover everything. Google can't rank one page for "acne treatment," "psoriasis specialist," "Botox," and "laser resurfacing" simultaneously. Dedicated pages can, and they give Google the relevance signals that lift your Map Pack ranking too.
Split your pages into two clusters. The medical cluster covers conditions: acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, skin cancer screening, and mole removal. The cosmetic cluster covers treatments: Botox, dermal fillers, laser hair removal, chemical peels, and skin resurfacing. Each page names the condition or treatment plus your city in the title, explains who it helps, and carries your local contact details.
A practice in Raleigh, NC built out eight condition pages and six treatment pages over a quarter. They went from ranking for a handful of generic terms to appearing for dozens of specific, high-intent searches, and the treatment pages converted far better because a patient searching for chemical peels landed on a chemical peel page, not a homepage.
🛠️ Action Step: List your top five medical conditions and top five cosmetic treatments. Build one page for each. Use the exact phrases patients search, covered in our local keyword research guide.
Dermatology practices can ethically request Google reviews, and review recency now outweighs raw review count, so a steady flow of fresh reviews is one of your strongest ranking levers. The catch is HIPAA: you can never confirm someone is a patient or reference their treatment in a public response.
This is the Flento Recency Engine approach, built to keep reviews flowing without a privacy slip.
A dermatology group in Chicago, IL moved from a stale review profile to a steady monthly flow and watched its ranking for "dermatologist near me" climb over a season, purely from recency. The wording rules in our guide to getting more Google reviews apply directly here.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Writing "So glad your acne cleared up" in a review response confirms treatment and creates a HIPAA exposure even if the patient mentioned it. Keep every reply generic and warm, never specific.
Your Name, Address, and Phone number have to match exactly across every health directory, or Google discounts your ranking. Google cross-references your information across the web, so when Healthgrades lists an old suite number and Zocdoc has a former phone line, your listing loses trust it should have.
For dermatology, the directories that carry the most weight are Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Vitals, RealSelf for cosmetic work, and your insurance panel listings, plus Google, Yelp, and Facebook. These often outrank a practice's own website, so an error there costs real visibility.
A multi-provider practice in Dallas, TX had merged two offices and left three conflicting addresses across a dozen directories. Cleaning that up, with no other change, recovered rankings that had slipped after the merge. Our primer on NAP consistency explains why Google treats this as a prerequisite.
📊 Flento Data: Inconsistent business information across directories is one of the most common reasons a fully optimized profile still underperforms. It's unglamorous and high-impact at the same time.
🛠️ Action Step: Audit every directory listing and confirm the Name, Address, and Phone match your GBP exactly. Fix conflicts this week, starting with Healthgrades and Zocdoc.
Flento runs the medical and cosmetic funnels together, which is exactly the problem dermatology practices struggle to manage by hand. Flento's Google Business Profile Optimizer flags a missing cosmetic secondary category, incomplete fields, and thin photo content, the three issues that most often hold dermatology profiles back.
The Flento Recency Engine described above is what Flento's Google Review Management Software automates: privacy-safe review requests after billing and prompts for generic, HIPAA-safe responses so recency stays high without any confidentiality risk. And Flento's Business Listing Management Software scans Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Vitals, and 50 other directories in one pass to catch the NAP errors that quietly drag rankings down after a move or a new provider joins.
The practices capturing both medical and cosmetic patients aren't working harder. They picked the right categories, they keep reviews fresh, and they keep listings clean. You can try Flento free and start with a full profile audit.

Q: What is local SEO for dermatologists? A: Local SEO for dermatologists is the process of optimizing your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, and website so your practice appears when local patients search for dermatology conditions and cosmetic treatments. It targets Map Pack visibility for both medical searches like "dermatologist near me" and cosmetic searches like "Botox near me."
Q: What GBP category should a dermatology practice use? A: Use "Dermatologist" as your primary category in nearly all cases, then add cosmetic secondary categories such as "Skin care clinic," "Medical spa," or "Laser hair removal service" to capture cosmetic searches. Avoid dropping "Dermatologist" for a cosmetic-only primary, since that removes you from high-volume medical searches.
Q: How do dermatologists get Google reviews under HIPAA? A: Dermatologists can request reviews as long as they never confirm a patient's identity or treatment publicly. Send private review requests after the visit, let patients review anonymously, and keep every response generic. Cosmetic patients are usually more willing to review publicly, which helps build volume safely.
Q: Should medical and cosmetic services have separate pages? A: Yes. Medical conditions and cosmetic treatments are searched with different intent, so each should have its own dedicated page. A single services page cannot rank for acne, psoriasis, Botox, and laser resurfacing at once, while individual pages rank for far more high-intent searches and convert better.
Q: Which directories matter most for dermatology local SEO? A: The highest-impact directories for dermatology are Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Vitals, and RealSelf for cosmetic work, alongside Google, Yelp, and Facebook. Your Name, Address, and Phone must match exactly across all of them, since Google uses that consistency as a ranking signal.
Q: How long does dermatology local SEO take to work? A: Most dermatology practices see ranking movement within 60 to 90 days after correcting categories, cleaning up NAP consistency, and starting a steady review flow. Directory fixes can work faster, while competitive cosmetic searches in large markets like Los Angeles, CA may take longer.
Dermatology local SEO works when you treat your practice as two funnels, not one. Set a category structure that captures both medical and cosmetic searches, build dedicated pages for the conditions and treatments patients actually type, keep reviews fresh within HIPAA limits, and hold your business information consistent across health directories. Do those and you'll show up for the full range of patients your practice can serve, not just half of them. Pick the weakest funnel today, fix its category and its top three pages, and build from there.
Will this guarantee the top spot in a market as competitive as New York, NY? No. But it will put you ahead of the many dermatology practices optimizing for only one kind of patient, and in local search that gap is usually enough.
