The opening date field has attracted more strategy than it can support. Here is what it actually does, why backdating does not work, and the one situation where it genuinely matters.
The opening date field sits near the bottom of your Google Business Profile, asks for a month and year, and gets filled in with a guess by most business owners who ever fill it in at all. It is one of the least discussed fields on the profile, which has produced a small mythology about what it does.
The short answer is that it does less than people hope and more than nothing. It is worth setting accurately, worth understanding, and not worth manipulating.
This guide covers what the opening date actually affects, whether changing it helps, and the specific situations where it genuinely matters.

The opening date tells Google and customers when your business began operating at that location, and its main visible effect is displaying an "Opening soon" label for future dates rather than influencing rankings directly.
Google has never listed business age as a ranking factor. Its guidance on improving local ranking is consistently relevance, distance and prominence, and opening date does not obviously map to any of them.
What it demonstrably does:
What there is no good evidence for:
⚠️ Common Mistake: Backdating the opening date to look more established. It is inaccurate business information, it can conflict with other data Google holds about you, and there is no evidence it helps.
Older businesses often rank better, but through the things age produces rather than through the date field itself.
This is the distinction that causes the confusion. Established businesses do tend to outrank new ones, and it is tempting to attribute that to the date.
What actually accumulates with age:
None of that transfers by editing a field. Setting your opening date to 1998 does not give you 1998's citations. The date is a label; the ranking comes from the accumulation.
💡 Pro Tip: If you are new and worried about competing with established businesses, the answer is review velocity and citation building, not the date field. Those are the mechanisms actually producing the advantage you are trying to copy.
Set a future opening date if you are not yet trading, because it unlocks the "Opening soon" label and lets you build profile presence before your doors open.
This is the field's real use case and it is genuinely valuable.
Why pre-opening setup helps:
How to use it:
When the date passes, the label disappears automatically and the profile behaves normally. Guidance for the launch period itself is in the GBP optimization checklist.
Use the date you began operating at the current address, not the date the business was founded, because the field describes the location rather than the legal entity.
This trips up businesses that have moved, and both answers feel defensible.
Use the current location's date when: you moved premises, opened a second site, or the listing represents a specific location of a multi-site business.
The founding date is fine when: you have operated from the same address since inception.
Why it matters practically: an opening date that predates the building or conflicts with your lease and licensing records is an inconsistency, and consistency across your business data is worth more than any perceived age advantage.
🛠️ Action Step: Check whether your listed opening date matches the date on your lease or licence for that address. If it does not, correct it to the accurate one.
Change your opening date only to correct an inaccuracy, because there is no evidence that adjusting it improves rankings and inaccurate data creates avoidable risk.
The honest answer to "should I change it" is: only if it is wrong.
Change it when:
Do not change it:
Edits can trigger review. Any change to profile information can prompt Google to re-verify, and an unnecessary edit that puts your listing into review is a poor trade for a field with no demonstrated ranking effect.
📊 Flento Data: Across local profiles, the fields that reliably correlate with performance are the ones customers act on, such as hours, services and attributes. Metadata fields like opening date show no comparable relationship.
New businesses should build review velocity and citation consistency rather than worrying about the opening date, because those are the signals that actually close the gap with established competitors.
If you have just opened and you are looking at the date field wondering whether it is holding you back, it is not.
What actually moves a new business:
Review velocity is the fastest lever. A new business that collects reviews steadily for six months will outperform an older competitor whose newest review is two years old.
🔥 Quick Win: Set an accurate opening date once, then close the settings page and go set up your review request process. That is where the return is.

Q: Does the Google Business Profile opening date affect rankings? A: There is no good evidence that it does directly. Google names relevance, distance and prominence as its ranking factors, and opening date does not map cleanly to any of them. Older businesses rank better because of what they accumulate, not because of the field.
Q: Should I backdate my opening date to look more established? A: No. It is inaccurate business information, it can conflict with other records Google holds, and there is no evidence it helps. It also risks putting your listing into review for no return.
Q: What opening date should a relocated business use? A: The date you began operating at the current address. The field describes the location rather than the legal entity, and a date that predates your lease is an inconsistency.
Q: Can I create a Google Business Profile before opening? A: Yes, and you should. Set a future opening date, complete the profile, and get verified in advance. The "Opening soon" label displays and verification takes time you will not have on launch week.
Q: What happens when the future opening date passes? A: The "Opening soon" label disappears automatically and the profile behaves normally. If your opening is delayed, update the date rather than leaving an inaccurate one in place.
Q: If the opening date does not help, what should a new business focus on? A: Review velocity first, then citation consistency and complete profile information. Those are the mechanisms that actually produce the advantage established competitors have.
The opening date is a small, honest field that has attracted more strategy than it can support. Set it accurately, once, and move on.
The advantage you are trying to reverse-engineer by editing it is real, but it lives in reviews, citations and consistency accumulated over years. Those you can build. A date you can only type.
