Are Google or Yelp reviews more important for your business? Compare how each platform drives customers, which industries rely on each, and where to focus.
Most business owners ask: "Should I be focusing on Google reviews or Yelp?"
The honest answer: Google reviews matter more for most businesses. But Yelp matters a lot for specific industries, and ignoring it entirely is a mistake.
Here's the complete breakdown.
Once you've decided how much Yelp matters, our Yelp review management guide covers responding and reporting.
Google Reviews:
Yelp Reviews:
Google Reviews dominate for:
Yelp Reviews matter equally or more for:
Both matter equally for:
📊 Flento Data: For restaurant businesses, Yelp generates 42% of review-influenced traffic decisions vs. 58% from Google. For home services, that ratio flips to 15% Yelp vs 85% Google.
This is why Yelp matters even if you're not focused on restaurants.
Apple Maps, the default navigation on all iPhones, pulls star ratings from Yelp for most business categories. When an iPhone user searches Apple Maps for a plumber or hair salon, the star ratings they see come from Yelp.
If you have no Yelp reviews, you have no stars on Apple Maps.
And since iPhones make up the majority of US smartphones, especially in higher-income demographics, Yelp reviews have a reach that goes well beyond yelp.com.

Yelp Reviews:
⚠️ Common Mistake: Asking customers to leave Yelp reviews violates Yelp's Terms of Service. Unlike Google, where asking is not only allowed but encouraged, Yelp requires reviews to come organically. Asking can get legitimate reviews filtered or your business penalized.
Here's a critical distinction: Yelp reviews don't affect your Google Maps ranking.
Your position in the Google local pack is determined by Google reviews, your GBP optimization, and your overall prominence on the web, not Yelp.
However, Yelp pages themselves rank on Google. A highly reviewed Yelp page for your business category in your city can appear on Page 1 of Google organic results, effectively giving you more real estate on Google through a third party.
Yelp SEO is the practice of optimizing your Yelp business page so it ranks higher in Yelp's own search results and, just as importantly, in Google's organic results for "[your business type] [city]" searches. It's a different discipline from Google Business Profile optimization, Yelp's algorithm weighs different signals and has stricter rules about how you can grow your review count.
The Yelp Visibility Stack, our framework for prioritizing Yelp SEO work:
Layer 1, profile completeness. Claim your listing first, an unclaimed Yelp page can't be edited and sends a weak trust signal. Fill out every field: hours, price range, service area, attributes (Wi-Fi, parking, accepts credit cards), and a complete business description using your actual service and city naturally, not keyword-stuffed.
Layer 2, photos. Yelp is a highly visual platform, listings with 20 or more photos consistently outperform sparse ones in both Yelp's internal ranking and user click-through. Upload real photos of your work, your space, and your team, not stock images.
Layer 3, review velocity and response. Yelp does not allow you to solicit reviews directly, that's a hard rule, not a suggestion. What you can do is respond to every review, positive and negative, professionally and promptly. Response activity is a signal Yelp's algorithm reads as an actively managed business.
Layer 4, category and keyword accuracy. Pick the most specific Yelp category available for your business, and make sure your business description and services list use the exact terms customers search, not generic language.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Asking customers to leave Yelp reviews. This is against Yelp's Terms of Service, and unlike Google, where asking is expected, Yelp actively filters reviews it suspects were solicited, sometimes hiding legitimate reviews from new or infrequent Yelp users as a side effect. Build the profile well and let organic reviews follow.
Why Yelp SEO affects your Google visibility too: Yelp pages carry substantial domain authority, and a well-optimized Yelp listing for your business category and city frequently ranks on page 1 of Google's organic results, independent of your own website or GBP. For businesses in Yelp-heavy categories (restaurants, salons, bars, hospitality), this means Yelp SEO work effectively earns you a second listing on Google's first page, not just visibility on Yelp itself.
Focus on Google first if your business is in home services, professional services, or healthcare, you're primarily trying to improve your Google Maps ranking, your customers are more likely Android users or Google-first searchers, or you have fewer than 30 Google reviews.
Add Yelp second if you're in restaurants, retail, beauty, or hospitality, your target customers are likely iPhone users, you want visibility on Apple Maps, or Yelp pages for your category already rank on page 1 of Google in your city.
💡 Pro Tip: The fastest way to grow Yelp reviews organically is making sure your Yelp profile is fully optimized with photos, accurate info, and responses to existing reviews. Active, complete listings attract more organic reviews from customers who are already Yelp users, without you ever asking.
Action Step: Check your Yelp listing right now. Is it claimed? Is the info accurate? Do you have 20 or more photos? If not, claim it and spend 20 minutes completing it. Then check what star rating appears for your business on Apple Maps, that's your Yelp rating showing up there.

What is Yelp SEO?
Yelp SEO is optimizing your Yelp business listing, completeness, photos, category accuracy, and review responsiveness, so it ranks higher both within Yelp's own search and in Google's organic results for your business category and city. It's distinct from Google Business Profile SEO because Yelp weighs different signals and strictly prohibits soliciting reviews.
Does Yelp SEO help my Google Maps ranking?
Not directly. Yelp reviews and activity don't feed into Google's local ranking algorithm the way Google reviews do. What Yelp SEO does provide is a separate ranking opportunity, a well-optimized Yelp page can independently rank on page 1 of Google's organic results for "[business type] [city]" searches, giving you additional visibility alongside your Google Business Profile rather than boosting it directly.
Are Yelp reviews or Google reviews more important?
For most industries, Google reviews matter more since they directly influence your Local Pack ranking. Yelp reviews matter equally or more specifically for restaurants, bars, salons, and hospitality businesses, and they matter for every business type through the Apple Maps connection, since Apple Maps pulls star ratings from Yelp for most categories.
Can I ask customers for Yelp reviews the same way I ask for Google reviews?
No. Yelp's Terms of Service prohibit soliciting reviews, while Google not only allows it but expects it. Asking for a Yelp review risks getting that review, and potentially others from the same customer's network, filtered by Yelp's recommendation algorithm. Build your Yelp presence through profile completeness and response activity instead, and reserve direct review requests for Google.
