Temporarily closed suppresses visibility while it is active, and seasonal businesses often should not use it at all. Here is when to use it, when to set hours instead, and how to reopen cleanly.
Closing for a fortnight is a normal thing for a business to do. Renovations, a family emergency, a seasonal break, a burst pipe. What is not normal is what happens to some listings afterwards: rankings that do not come back, a profile Google has quietly decided is dormant, or worse, one marked permanently closed by someone who misread the situation.
Most of that damage is avoidable, and it comes down to using the right setting and telling people what is happening.
This guide covers what temporarily closed actually does to your profile, when to use it instead of adjusting hours, and how to reopen without a lasting ranking cost.

Marking a profile temporarily closed tells Google and customers that the business will reopen, and it typically suppresses visibility while the flag is active rather than removing the listing.
The setting exists for genuine situations and using it honestly is better than the alternatives. But understand what it costs while it is on.
While temporarily closed:
What it does not do:
⚠️ Common Mistake: Marking a business permanently closed by accident when a temporary closure was intended. Permanently closed is far harder to reverse and can require re-verification, so check which setting you have selected.
If this comes up for you, we cover it in more detail in our piece on local SEO for businesses that only operate weekends.
Use temporarily closed for closures of roughly a week or more, and adjust your hours instead for anything shorter.
The setting is a blunt instrument. For a long weekend or a public holiday, special hours are the correct tool and they carry no visibility cost.
Use temporarily closed for:
Use special hours instead for:
Do not use it at all for: a change in your service model, a move to appointment-only, or going remote. Those are hour and attribute changes, not closures.
🛠️ Action Step: If your closure is under a week, close the settings page and go set special hours instead. It achieves the same customer clarity without the visibility hit.
The same principles carry over to specific trades, and local SEO for water parks shows what they look like in one niche.
Seasonal businesses should generally set genuine off-season hours rather than marking temporarily closed, because an annually recurring closed flag can suppress visibility during the run-up when customers start planning.
This matters for ski hire, pool services, holiday attractions, seasonal food businesses and anything else with a defined operating season.
The problem with closing entirely is timing. People research a summer camp in March and a ski rental in October. If your profile is flagged closed during the research window, you are invisible exactly when demand is forming.
Better approach for seasonal operations:
💡 Pro Tip: Keep a phone answered during the off-season even in a limited way. It lets you stay open on your profile through the booking research window, which is often when the season is actually won.
Industry-specific advice helps here, for example local SEO for ice rink & seasonal venue operators.
Publish the closure and the reopening date on your profile and website before the closure begins, because a customer who arrives at a closed door without warning is the most likely source of a negative review.
The operational damage usually outweighs the ranking damage.
Before closing:
Being specific is what prevents complaints. "Closed for renovations, reopening 15 October" reassures. "Temporarily closed" alone reads as a business in trouble, and customers start looking elsewhere permanently.
If this comes up for you, we cover it in more detail in our piece on handling your GBP during a renovation.
Remove the temporarily closed flag on the day you actually reopen, verify your hours are correct, and post about reopening, because Google needs a clear signal that the business is active again.
Recovery is usually straightforward if you handle the reopening properly.
The reopening sequence:
Reviews in the first fortnight matter more than usual. A steady flow of new reviews is one of the clearest signals that a business is genuinely operating again.
📊 Flento Data: Across local profiles, listings that resume review activity quickly after a closure recover visibility faster than those that reopen quietly, which suggests activity signals matter more than the closure itself.
Expect visibility to recover within roughly two to six weeks of reopening, provided you removed the flag promptly and resumed normal activity.
Some lag is normal. Google is re-establishing that the business is active.
A realistic timeline:
If recovery stalls, check first whether your hours are correct, whether a duplicate listing appeared during the closure, and whether third parties suggested edits while you were not watching. Duplicates in particular are covered in the duplicate profile guide.
Flento monitors your profile through a closure, which matters because unattended listings are exactly when unwanted edits and duplicates appear.
Google Business Profile Optimizer watches for changes to your listing while you are closed, so you find out about a third-party edit immediately rather than on reopening day.
Local Keyword Rank Tracker gives you a before-and-after baseline, which is the only way to tell whether your recovery is on a normal curve or has stalled.
Google Review Management Software restarts review flow immediately on reopening, which is the strongest signal that the business is active again.

Q: Does marking a business temporarily closed hurt Google rankings? A: It typically suppresses visibility while the flag is active, which is the point of the setting. It does not permanently damage the listing, and visibility generally recovers within two to six weeks of reopening properly.
Q: When should a US business use temporarily closed instead of changing hours? A: For closures of roughly a week or more. For holidays, long weekends or short staffing gaps, special hours achieve the same clarity for customers with no visibility cost.
Q: Should seasonal businesses mark themselves temporarily closed in the off-season? A: Usually not. Customers research seasonal services months ahead, and a closed flag makes you invisible during that window. Setting limited off-season hours while still answering enquiries generally works better.
Q: What happens to reviews during a temporary closure? A: They remain, and new reviews can still be left. Nothing is lost. Resuming review activity quickly after reopening is one of the strongest signals that the business is operating again.
Q: How long does it take to recover visibility after reopening? A: Typically two to six weeks. If you are still down after eight, check for incorrect hours, a duplicate listing created during the closure, or third-party edits made while nobody was watching.
Q: What if I accidentally marked my business permanently closed? A: Change it back as soon as possible. Permanently closed is harder to reverse than a temporary flag and may require re-verification, so act quickly and be ready with your business documentation.
A temporary closure is not a threat to your local presence unless you handle it carelessly. The businesses that suffer are the ones that close without telling anyone, leave the flag on for a fortnight after reopening, or use the setting for a long weekend.
Tell people the dates. Watch the profile while you are away. Remove the flag the morning you unlock the door, and get reviews moving again in the first two weeks.
Do that and the closure costs you a few weeks, not a season. Try Flento free to keep an eye on the listing while you are shut.
