Handyman businesses have a distinct local SEO challenge: you're a service-area business without a storefront, you offer a broad range of services under one umbrella, and you're competing against both individual operators and large franchise networks like Neighborly and Ace Handyman Services.
Getting the fundamentals right makes the difference between a phone that rings and one that doesn't.

This is the most important technical decision for handyman local SEO. Because you work at customer locations (not a physical address customers visit), you need to set up GBP as a service-area business.
What this means:
How to set it correctly:
⚠️ Common Mistake: Adding too large a service area to "capture more searches" actually hurts your rankings for the areas where you're most active. Google ranks service-area businesses most strongly where they have review evidence of actually working. Be honest about your real territory.
Other local businesses face this exact challenge, such as local SEO for carpet cleaning.
Primary category: Handyman
Secondary categories:
Services section, be extremely specific: This is where handymen underperform. Instead of listing "General handyman services," break it down:
The more specific your services list, the more often you appear for specific searches like "drywall repair near me" or "TV mounting service [city]."
Every completed job is a review opportunity. The customer just watched you solve a problem in their home, they're satisfied, grateful, and in direct contact with you.
The ask: Before you leave, as you're confirming the work with the customer: "I'm so glad we got that sorted for you. If you have a second to leave us a Google review, it really helps small businesses like mine. I can text you the link right now."
Text the review link immediately. Don't wait, the motivation is highest right now.
What good handyman reviews look like:
Encourage customers to mention the specific service and their neighborhood, both help your relevance for geo-targeted keyword searches.
💡 Pro Tip: Ask your best customers (the ones who booked multiple jobs) to leave a review that mentions what you've done for them over time. "Kevin has fixed our deck, installed our lighting, and patched our drywall over the past year" is a powerfully credible review.
Handymen offer 15–30 different services. You can't effectively optimize for all of them simultaneously, but you can prioritize.
How to prioritize:
For most handymen: drywall repair, door repair/installation, general home repair, and a specialty (tile, decks, or painting) are the core keyword targets.
Use GBP posts to showcase different services: One week: post about a drywall repair job. Next week: a deck project. This signals relevance across your service range without diluting your primary category focus.
Service-area businesses without a public address still need consistent NAP data in directories. Use your registered business address (which can be a home address set to not-publicly-displayed) consistently across all listings.
Key directories for handymen:
Consistent NAP data signals legitimacy even for service-area businesses.
Ace Handyman Services, Neighborly, Mr. Handyman, these franchises have strong brand recognition and often appear in broad handyman searches.
Where independent handymen win:
📊 Flento Data: Independent handymen with 40+ Google reviews outrank franchise competitors for neighborhood-specific searches in the same ZIP code 61% of the time.
Can a handyman without a business address get a GBP listing? Yes. Set up a service-area business listing without displaying a home address. GBP fully supports this setup for businesses that serve customers at their location rather than a physical storefront.
How many Google reviews does a handyman need to rank? In most US markets: 20–40 reviews with a 4.5+ rating puts you in strong contention for your primary service area. Independent operators with consistent reviews often outrank franchise competitors.
Should a handyman use Google Local Services Ads alongside local SEO? Yes, Google Local Services Ads (LSAs) appear above the organic local pack and are pay-per-verified-lead (not per click). They're highly efficient for handymen because lead quality is high. Run LSAs alongside ongoing local SEO investment for maximum coverage.
Handyman services live and die by local search. A fully optimized GBP, consistent reviews, and accurate service listings are the difference between a calendar that's booked out 2 weeks and one that's waiting for the phone to ring.
