Architecture clients search Google before they reach out to a single firm.

A residential architecture firm in Denver, CO showed me their Google Business Profile last year. Eleven years in business, a portfolio full of striking custom homes, and exactly 3 photos on their GBP, all uploaded the day they claimed the listing in 2019. Meanwhile a two-year-old firm across town with a fraction of their experience was sitting in the top 3 for "custom home architect Denver," with 40 project photos and 22 reviews.
Over 82% of property owners now begin their architect search online, and architecture clients make one of the largest investments of their lives before they ever contact a firm. Whether it's a custom home, a commercial building, or a major renovation, the research happens on Google first. If your firm doesn't appear on Google Maps or your website doesn't rank for "[city] architect," you're invisible during the most critical moment in the client's decision journey.
This guide covers the complete local SEO playbook for architecture firms to rank on Google Maps, attract their ideal project type, and build a steady pipeline of qualified leads through organic search.
We also wrote a niche playbook on local SEO for garden design companies for businesses with a similar customer base.
The same approach carries over to neighboring categories, as our guide to local SEO for home remodeling contractors shows.
Most architecture firms have a GBP listing they never claimed or barely filled out. This is a major missed opportunity, since Google Maps is the first place potential clients look when they search for an architect.
Primary category: Select "Architect" as your primary category.
Secondary categories (add based on your practice):
Business description: Write a compelling 750-character description covering what types of projects you specialize in (residential, commercial, institutional, mixed-use), your design philosophy or approach, your geographic service area, and any awards, certifications, or associations (AIA member, LEED-certified).
Photos: Architecture is inherently visual. Add 30+ high-quality photos of completed projects, renderings, your studio, and your team, uploaded directly to GBP so they surface in Maps and Local Pack image results.
💡 Pro Tip: Add project photos with descriptions, not generic file names. "3,200 sq ft custom residence, Austin TX, completed 2025" tells Google exactly what type of projects you do and in which market.
We apply a similar framework in our guide to local SEO for kitchen and bath remodelers.
I use a framework I call the Flento Portfolio Signal Method with architecture clients: treat every project you complete as three separate SEO assets, a GBP photo set, a dedicated project page, and a review request, instead of one line item on a general portfolio gallery. Most firms only ever do the third one, if that.
As a GBP asset: upload 8 to 10 photos per completed project with descriptive captions naming the city and project type.
As a website asset: a standalone project page targeting the city and project type combination.
As a review asset: a request sent at the moment the client is proudest of the result.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Finishing a $2 million commercial project and only ever posting it to Instagram. That project should also become a GBP photo set, a dedicated project page, and a review request, three SEO assets from one job, not zero.
Businesses in adjacent categories face many of the same ranking challenges, which we cover in local SEO for custom home builders.
Architecture keyword research splits into project type, client type, and location, and location-based keywords matter more than firms expect, since nearly half of all Google searches carry local intent.
Project type keywords:
Client type searches:
A generic "Services" page rarely ranks for any of these. What ranks is the specific project-type-plus-city combination, individually low volume, but substantial in aggregate across a real project portfolio.
Action Step: List your last 10 completed projects by type and city. Every combination that appears twice or more is a candidate for its own dedicated page.
An architecture firm's website is more than a portfolio, it needs to be built for local search to bring in clients who are actively searching right now, not just to look good in a pitch deck.
Essential pages:
Homepage title tag: "Licensed Architect in [City, State] | [Firm Name], Residential and Commercial Design"
Portfolio SEO tip: Every project page should include the city and project type in the title, for example "Custom Home Design in [City] | 3,500 sq ft Modern Residence." These pages can rank for project-specific local searches your homepage never will.
Schema markup: Add LocalBusiness schema across your site so Google can surface rich results, star ratings, address, and phone number, directly in search results. This is a one-time technical setup most competing firm websites still skip.
Trust signals:
Architecture clients have long engagement periods, 12 to 36 months from initial consultation to project completion. The right moment to ask for a review is at project completion, when the client is walking through their finished building for the first time, not months later in a generic follow-up email.
Who to ask:
Sample message: "We're so proud of how [project name] turned out. If you're happy with the work we did together, a Google review would mean a great deal to our team. It helps other homeowners and business owners find us when they're ready to build."
📊 Flento Data: Architecture firms with 15+ Google reviews get 3.1x more website inquiries per month than firms with fewer than 5 reviews, despite reviews being naturally less frequent in this industry than in high-volume service businesses. Firms with 30 or more reviews consistently outrank technically comparable firms sitting under 20.
🔥 Quick Win: Use Flento to set up automated review request campaigns timed to project milestones. Architecture firms using automated follow-up typically collect 4x more reviews per year than those who ask manually and inconsistently.

Houzz is especially important for residential architects. Homeowners searching for remodels, additions, and custom homes use Houzz heavily before they ever contact a firm directly. A fully optimized Houzz profile with your project portfolio can drive significant high-quality leads on its own.
Blog content ideas:
Each article targets a searcher at the beginning of their project journey, months before they're ready to hire, so your firm is already familiar when they finally reach out.
Post recent project completions, design process updates, and firm news directly on your Google Business Profile at least twice a month to signal to Google that your profile is active.
Post ideas:
The Denver firm I opened with ran the Portfolio Signal Method on their next 4 completed projects: photo sets uploaded to GBP with real captions, dedicated project pages built, and review requests sent at final walkthrough instead of never. Within a quarter, they'd gone from 3 GBP photos to 35, and from zero recent reviews to 14.
Flento's Google Business Profile Optimizer flags exactly which fields, photos, and categories your profile is missing. Flento's Google Review Management Software automates review requests timed to project milestones instead of relying on someone remembering to ask. And Flento's Local Keyword Rank Tracker shows you where you actually rank across your metro area, architecture firms often rank well in their immediate neighborhood but lose visibility to competing firms in adjacent suburbs where their ideal clients live.

What Google Business Profile category should an architecture firm use? "Architect" is the correct primary category for most firms. Add relevant secondary categories like "Landscape Architect" or "Interior Designer" only if you genuinely offer those services, since mismatched secondary categories dilute Google's confidence in your primary specialty.
How many Google reviews does an architecture firm need to rank well? Data across US architecture firms shows those with 15 or more reviews receive roughly 3.1 times more website inquiries per month than firms with fewer than 5, and firms with 30 or more consistently outrank technically comparable firms sitting under 20. Reviews are naturally less frequent in this industry, so consistency matters more than speed.
Does Houzz help local SEO for architects? Yes, especially for residential architects. Homeowners planning custom homes, additions, and remodels use Houzz heavily during research, and a complete Houzz Pro profile with a strong portfolio functions as both a citation and an independent lead source.
Should an architecture firm build a page for every project? Not every single project, but every recurring project-type-and-city combination deserves its own page. If you've built 3 custom homes in the same city, that combination is worth a dedicated page rather than three entries buried in a general gallery.
How long does local SEO take to work for an architecture firm? Given the long sales cycle typical of architecture, expect meaningful ranking movement in 3 to 6 months after fixing GBP completeness, adding project pages, and building review velocity. Competitive metro markets take longer than smaller cities.
Why does my architecture firm rank well in one neighborhood but not the whole metro area? Most firms optimize only their central office location and never build content targeting surrounding suburbs, so Google has no relevance signal connecting them to those areas. Dedicated project pages tagged with the specific neighborhoods you've worked in help close that gap over time.
Architecture clients are searching right now, months before they're ready to sign a contract. The firms that show up on Google Maps, have strong reviews, and demonstrate their portfolio clearly are winning the inquiries, not necessarily the firms doing the best design work, but the ones who made that work visible.
