Packaging company SEO: keywords by material and industry, minimum-order and custom-order signals, RFQ pages, trust signals, and business-client reviews.
A custom packaging manufacturer outside Chicago, IL went from page 2 of local search results to the top of the Local Pack for "custom packaging supplier" in about 10 weeks. They didn't lower their minimum order quantities, undercut a single competitor's pricing, or hire a sales team. They fixed five things on a Google Business Profile that had been ignored since it was first claimed.
Everyone in B2B manufacturing tells you local SEO doesn't matter because deals close through RFPs and existing vendor relationships. That's not wrong for your existing accounts, but it's incomplete, and for most packaging companies trying to win new commercial clients, it's actually the wrong assumption to start from.
The same approach carries over to neighboring categories, as our guide to local SEO for elevator service companies shows.
Owners of neighboring trades run into the same Maps visibility problems, so our guide to local SEO for foundry and metal casting works is worth a look if your customers overlap.
Buyers searching for a packaging company are procurement managers and operations leads evaluating a vendor for custom orders, not consumers browsing packaging supplies at a retail store. That distinction matters because it changes what your Google Business Profile actually needs to communicate, and it's exactly where most manufacturers get it wrong.
A buyer searching "custom packaging manufacturer [city]" or "corrugated box supplier near me" is often trying to distinguish a manufacturer capable of custom orders and minimum quantities from a retail packaging supply store selling pre-made boxes off a shelf. If your profile doesn't make that distinction obvious immediately, you get filtered out of consideration before a sales call ever happens.
Here's where most advice gets it wrong: it treats packaging companies like any other local business, applying retail-style local SEO tactics to a business that actually sells on capability and capacity, not convenience.
Action Step: Search your own core service terms today and see whether your profile clearly reads as a manufacturer, or whether it could be mistaken for a retail packaging supply store.
We break down local SEO for companies that sell only to other businesses in our guide to local SEO for commercial-only businesses.
Choose the most specific primary category available, such as "Packaging supplier," "Corrugated box manufacturer," or "Custom manufacturer," rather than a generic "Packaging supply store" category that implies retail sales of pre-made products. Category precision is one of the clearest local SEO ranking factors, and it's also the fastest way to signal manufacturer status instead of retail status to both Google and the buyer reading your profile.
If your business operates as a regional manufacturer serving clients across multiple states rather than a single retail storefront, consider a service area business setup instead of a standard location listing, since that better reflects how your actual customer base is distributed.
I know this sounds counterintuitive for an industry that assumes deals close through direct sales relationships alone. Stay with me: even relationship-driven buyers frequently vet a new or unfamiliar vendor online before a first meeting, and your category setup is the first signal they see.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Using a generic "Packaging supply store" category when your business exclusively serves custom, minimum-order commercial clients. This mismatch actively works against you in searches from the exact buyers you want.
Your GBP description and services section should state your minimum order quantities, custom capabilities, and typical turnaround time directly, since these are the exact qualifying facts a procurement manager needs before considering you a serious option. Vague descriptions about "quality packaging solutions" do none of that qualifying work.
I audited a packaging company's profile that spent its entire description on generic value language without a single concrete detail about minimum order size, material options, or turnaround time. A buyer comparing three manufacturers has no way to tell that company apart from a competitor based on the listing alone.
Here's where most advice gets it wrong again: it assumes detailed, specific information belongs only on a website's quote request page, buried behind a form. Buyers doing initial vendor research want that qualifying information visible before they ever click through.
Action Step: Rewrite your GBP description this week to state your minimum order quantity, core materials, and typical turnaround time in the first two sentences.
State concrete capacity and reliability facts in your description and posts, like production capacity, years in operation, certifications, or notable industries served, since a buyer choosing a packaging vendor is making a decision with real operational risk attached if the vendor can't deliver. These facts function as trust signals Google, and buyers, actually reward, not just marketing filler.
I've audited plenty of B2B manufacturers who assume their reputation alone carries new business, without translating any of that reputation into concrete, searchable facts a new buyer can verify. Reputation doesn't transfer automatically to someone who's never heard of you before typing a search into Google.
According to Google's own guidance on improving local ranking, a complete, specific, regularly updated profile consistently outperforms a thin one, regardless of how established the underlying business actually is.
Request reviews and testimonials from business clients that describe a specific project outcome, like meeting a tight production deadline or solving a custom packaging design challenge, since these read almost like mini case studies to a buyer doing vendor research. A generic "great to work with" review does far less qualifying work than one describing a specific problem solved.
I know asking a business client for a public review feels different than asking a consumer, and it is. Frame the request around the specific project you just completed together, and ask if they'd be willing to mention the outcome, not just their general satisfaction.
Flento's analysis of B2B service and manufacturing reviews shows that specific, outcome-focused reviews get referenced more often by prospective buyers doing comparison research than generic praise, even at similar overall star ratings.
💡 Pro Tip: After completing a custom order or hitting a tight deadline for a client, ask directly if they'd share a review describing that specific project. Most satisfied B2B clients are more willing than manufacturers assume.
The most common mistake is assuming local SEO is irrelevant to a relationship-driven, RFP-based industry, which ignores the vendor research happening online before most new relationships ever start. The second is a category and description setup that reads as a retail supply store instead of a custom manufacturer, filtering out exactly the buyers you want.
The third is neglecting to run a local citation audit across industry directories, since packaging manufacturers often appear on multiple trade directories with inconsistent business information that undermines the credibility your Google profile is trying to build.
⚠️ Common Mistake: Letting your Google Business Profile sit untouched for years because "our clients find us through referrals anyway." New accounts and expanding relationships almost always start with an online search, even in referral-heavy industries.
Run the Flento 3-Signal GBP Audit, checking completeness, activity, and review health in that order, to find exactly where your packaging company's profile is falling short. Completeness means specific categories, minimum order details, and capacity facts are all filled in. Activity means recent photos and posts show an operating, currently active business. Review health means recent, specific reviews with a strong response rate.
I'm skeptical of any advice claiming a single fix guarantees new accounts in a B2B manufacturing category this competitive. It doesn't work that way. But running this audit consistently is the highest-probability move based on what I've seen work across dozens of B2B service and manufacturing profiles.
📊 Flento Data: Across manufacturing and B2B supplier profiles Flento has analyzed, companies with complete categories and specific, outcome-focused reviews appeared in the Local Pack for commercial buyer searches at a meaningfully higher rate than companies with generic, incomplete profiles.

The Chicago manufacturer's jump to the top of the Local Pack wasn't a pricing change or a new sales hire. It was a profile that finally told buyers, clearly, that they were looking at a manufacturer, not a supply store.
SEO for packaging manufacturers works when your phrases match how buyers actually search: by material, product type, industry, and order size. Broad terms like "packaging" are dominated by retail suppliers and marketplaces, and won't bring the buyers you want.
| Keyword type | Examples | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Material and product | "custom corrugated boxes," "folding cartons," "flexible pouches," "custom labels" | Product pages |
| Industry | "food packaging manufacturer," "cosmetic packaging supplier," "e-commerce shipping boxes" | Industry pages |
| Order size | "low minimum order custom boxes," "short-run packaging" | Product and pricing pages |
| Capability | "custom die-cut packaging," "sustainable packaging manufacturer" | Capability pages |
| Local and regional | "packaging supplier [region]," "box manufacturer near [city]" | Location and About pages |
Pages that convert buyers: one page per product type, one per industry you serve, a clear minimum-order and lead-time page, a request-for-quote form, and case studies with real results such as reduced damage rates or cost per unit. Sustainability pages matter too, as many buyers search for recycled or recyclable options.
Links that carry weight: packaging industry associations and trade publications, supplier and partner directories, and local business groups. Keep your name, address, and phone identical across every directory, as our guide to NAP consistency explains.
Q: What are the best SEO keywords for packaging manufacturers? A: Material-and-product phrases like "custom corrugated boxes," industry phrases like "food packaging manufacturer," and order-size phrases like "low minimum order custom boxes."
Q: How do packaging suppliers get more leads from Google? A: Build a page for each product and industry, state minimum orders and lead times clearly, add a quote request form, publish case studies, and keep a complete local profile.
Q: Does local SEO actually matter for a B2B packaging manufacturer? A: Yes. Even relationship and referral-driven buyers frequently research an unfamiliar vendor online before a first conversation, and an incomplete or generic profile can filter you out of consideration before a sales call happens.
Q: What's the best GBP category for a custom packaging manufacturer? A: Choose the most specific match available, such as "Corrugated box manufacturer" or "Custom manufacturer," rather than a generic "Packaging supply store" category that implies retail sales.
Q: Should a packaging company use a service area business profile? A: Yes, if you serve clients across a broader region rather than primarily at a single physical location. This lets you represent your actual regional coverage accurately.
Q: What should a packaging company's GBP description include? A: Minimum order quantities, custom capabilities, typical turnaround time, and concrete capacity facts, rather than generic quality language that doesn't help a buyer qualify you against competitors.
Q: How do we get B2B clients to leave reviews? A: Ask directly after completing a specific project, framing the request around that project's outcome. Most satisfied business clients are more willing to leave a review than manufacturers expect.
Q: How often should a packaging company update its Google Business Profile? A: At minimum quarterly, and immediately whenever capacity, materials, or capabilities change, since those changes are exactly what a comparing buyer is trying to verify.
Q: Can a smaller regional packaging manufacturer compete with larger national suppliers in local search? A: Yes, particularly by being more specific and complete than a larger, centrally-managed competitor profile, and by building case-study style reviews that speak directly to the custom work larger suppliers may not prioritize.
Every month your Google Business Profile stays generic is another month a procurement manager searches for exactly what you make, finds a competitor's more specific listing instead, and never even knows your company existed as an option. The good news: everything covered here fits into a single week of focused work, not a quarter-long project.
